Student who was patted down each day allegedly shoots 2 staffers at Denver high school
Source: ABC News
A student who was under a "certain agreement to be patted down each day" at school allegedly shot and wounded two school administrators at East High School in Denver, authorities said.
The suspect, Austin Lyle, 17, fled the school on Wednesday morning after the shooting, Denver police said. His body was later discovered, officials said.
Police searching for the suspect had located his car in Park County, which is located southwest of Denver," officials said Wednesday evening. A male body was found near the vehicle, Park County Sheriff Tom McGraw later said during a press conference. The scene was being processed and the coroner was en route to the scene, McGraw said.

The suspected shooter was required to be searched at the beginning of each school day, officials said. He allegedly shot the school administrators as they patted him down Wednesday morning in the school's office area, which officials said is away from other students and staff.

(28,472 posts)I know the state has an obligation to provide education to all children, but surely something else could have been done in relation to this kid's previous behavior. Absolutely heartbreaking, all around.

I'm not sure there we draw the line between who can be saved and who can't.
I'd like to know where he got the gun

(8,820 posts)He previously attended an upper-crust High School in Arapahoe County. Evidently they had caught him with a fire arm, and expelled him.
Somehow, he ended up at a Denver High School who admitted him, subject to being frisked every day.
My opinion is, that his possession of a firearm at the age of 17 should have qualified him for a Reform school for lack of more up to date term. Basically a jail for those under 18, which has schooling.
Two years ago, there was an armed Denver police officer in ten of the roughest high schools in Denver. The DPS school board voted unanimously to remove them. The superintendent of the DPS, two years ago, pleaded to put them back in these ten schools for the students safety. The Denver Public School system board of directors refused his wishes.
Yesterday, the Superintendent of the DPS ordered An armed Denver Police officer, in uniform, be assigned to those ten schools, regardless of the Board's decision that had them removed, and Two officers assigned to East High School due to this incident, and many other incidents, (shooting) at this school recently.
Hell, when I was 17, and enrolled in a Denver High School, our main concern was what the school cafeteria was serving for lunch.
And I only recall, in my entire schooling in the DPS, one rogue shooting.
And where does a 17 YO kid get the money to drive around in a new Volvo, and to purchase an expensive hand gun. Parents?

(3,056 posts)I retired a couple of years ago, but got bored and went back to do a long-term sub gig at the Jr. high that fed into the high school where I taught.. They're both Title 1, and most of the kids have not grown up in any kind of stability.
But as tough as those high school kids were, these kids scare me more. Obviously, rational thought is not their long suit. The biggest issue for me is the fact that our school board has pretty much tied our hands when it comes to discipline in the classroom. They have to have 5 "minor" incidents before we can really do anything. (BTW, a kid flipping me off in class was deemed "minor".) We have posters all over school and in our classrooms about causes for expulsion, and having a weapon on campus is #1 on the list. And yet, we found a knife on a kid, and the result was a "restorative justice council" and parental conference. He's still at school.
Unfortunately, I'm willing to bet our school board is pretty much the same as most others. People who haven't been in a classroom for 20 years (or in some cases, ever...we actually had one who was a dropout) make decisions for the people who are.
And people wonder why teachers are leaving the profession in droves.

(7,410 posts)With 3D printing. A decent printer is only $300-400 and the CAD files are all free to download online. For a Glock model, once the gun frame is printed, just have to fit a few metal parts to make it functional. High capacity magazines are easily printed too, just need to buy the metal spring or make one.

(7,410 posts)When I was a teenager we were making faking IDs, homebrewing beer and wine, growing marijuana in the swamp, etc. We were pretty industrious about getting what we wanted, especially if it was somewhat illegal or forbidden.
3D printing is pretty cool, it is exploding as a hobby in many areas (not just guns) and availability, options and prices just get better everyday.
Could have been manufactured from an 80% kit, stolen from a parent or a car, bought illegally, many possibilities.
