Russia's security chief blasts West, dangles nuclear threats

Source: AP

By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV2 hours ago

MOSCOW (AP) — A top Russian security official warned Thursday about the rising threat of a nuclear war and blasted a German minister for threatening Russian President Vladimir Putin with arrest, saying that such action would amount to a declaration of war and trigger a Russian strike on Germany.

Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council chaired by Putin, said in video remarks to reporters that Russia’s relations with the West have hit an all-time bottom.

Asked whether the threat of a nuclear conflict has eased, Medvedev responded: “No, it hasn’t decreased, it has grown. Every day when they provide Ukraine with foreign weapons brings the nuclear apocalypse closer.”

He has issued a barrage of such strongly-worded statements in the past, blasting the U.S. and its NATO allies for what he described as their efforts to break up and destroy Russia. It’s been a drastic metamorphosis for the gentle-looking politician, who once was hailed by the West as a liberal hope.

and the provision to Ukraine of weaponry, is that the US is fulfilling its security obligation to Ukraine as set forth in the Budapest Memorandum, an obligation shared by Russia but abrogated in fact by Russia beginning 2014.

14. We have no obligation under the Budapest Memorandum

Contents:

Respect the signatory's independence and sovereignty in the existing borders.

Refrain from the threat or the use of force against the signatory.

Refrain from economic coercion designed to subordinate to their own interest the exercise by the signatory of the rights inherent in its sovereignty and thus to secure advantages of any kind.

Seek immediate Security Council action to provide assistance to the signatory if they "should become a victim of an act of aggression or an object of a threat of aggression in which nuclear weapons are used".

Refrain from the use of nuclear arms against the signatory.

Consult with one another if questions arise regarding those commitments.

We have no obligation under that agreement to arm anyone.

They aren't they only ones who can "dangle" nuclear warnings! And they have a lot more to lose, IME. I seriously doubt their nuclear weapons have been kept in any better condition than any of their other weapons. In fact, they'd probably do more damage trying to blast off than any they'd do once they did try to blast off the pad. (Although I'm loathe to test that statement)

Because.

Now, why US intel thought he was decent is a mystery. At least to me. Without an appeal to cynicism. (Wait. Is that a recognized fallacy?)

Putin:
* 70 years old
* extremely stressful job 24/7
* there are hints (jittery foot) that he has Parkinson's disease or similar

Medvedev
* 57 years old
* healthy

Putin won't be around forever.

I don't see there's any way we're going to get out of this without taking out at least these two warmongers. IOW, they're playing towards WWIII. All we're doing is staving it off as long as possible. And I don't see that situation going on forever, especially not with the R's in this country so gung-ho behind the idea, colluding with Putin.
