Advertisements promise cash bonuses and enticing benefits. Recruiters are making cold calls to eligible men. Enlistment offices are working with universities and social service agencies to lure students and the unemployed.
A new campaign is underway this spring across Russia, seeking recruits to replenish its troops for the war in Ukraine.
As fighting grinds on in Ukrainian battlegrounds like Bakhmut and both sides prepare for counteroffensives that could cost even more lives, the Kremlin's war machine badly needs new recruits.
A mobilization in September of 300,000 reservists billed as a partial call-up sent panic throughout the country, since most men under 65 are formally part of the reserve. Tens of thousands fled Russia rather than report to recruiting stations.

The Russians are getting massacred in their attempts to take the town.
The 4 hours he is referring to are Russian conscripts, not Ukrainian defenders.

Botany
(70,501 posts)this is not like WW II were the Soviets could mass together thousands of men and vehicles
and roll over the Germans in human waves because whenever they do that not the Ukrainians
have artillery that can drop rounds dead nuts onto them and the last time the Russians tried
to use their tanks all but 2 of them were taken out .... mostly by javelins.
Very shortly w/outside material support the Ukrainian forces and outside volunteers are going
to wipe the Russian ground troops out of Ukraine and that most likely includes Crimea too.
Look to see the U.A. forces to push the 60 miles south and take Mariupol back which will split
the Russian forces. (my guess)

(920 posts)In a country where there really is little chance they will be anywhere near what the oligarchs have, much less move up the financial ladder, I can see why there is no incentive in fighting this war. Russia's scientists, engineers, teachers, etc. are trying to emigrate from Russia. Russia isn't improving itself. But again, when all you have heard or seen through most of your life is propaganda from the Kremlin, I think it is telling. I don't remember which video it is, but this guy on Youtube, Vlad Vexler, goes into pretty good detail as to what the mindset is over there.

(920 posts)They have been touting traditional Christian family values and illiberalism and all that. Most Russians follow the Russian Orthodox Church. It is also ironic that they would call the West godless if they truly were communist.

(138 posts)The families of some Russian soldiers mobilized in Ukraine have been offered a care package by their city's mayor: a free bag of vegetables.
BBC journalist Francis Scarr posted a translated clip from Russian TV to Twitter on Monday. In the clip, Mayor Evgeny Grigoriev, an official in the Siberian city of Yakutsk, said the families of mobilized residents could proceed to collect a "one-off food package" this month.
Grigoriev said the package would contain fresh vegetables, including "cabbage, potato, carrot, beetroot, and onion."
