Kim Potter, officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright, is released from prison after serving 16 months

Source: CBS News

A white former police officer convicted of manslaughter after mistaking her handgun for a taser and fatally shooting Black motorist Daunte Wright in suburban Minneapolis in 2021 was released from prison on Monday, CBS Minnesota confirmed.

The Minnesota Department of Corrections said Kim Potter, the former officer, was released at 4 a.m. local time on Monday after serving 16 months of her two-year sentence, according to the news station. She will be on supervised release for the remainder of the sentence.

"Based on the intelligence we gathered, we released Ms. Potter at a time we felt was safest for her and for everyone at the correctional facility," DOC spokesperson Andy Skoogman said in a statement.

Skoogman had announced Potter's scheduled release on Friday. He said at the time that the exact timing of her departure Monday from Minnesota Correctional Facility-Shakopee won't be disclosed for security reasons.

Sounds like somebody found out she was a cop and was being targeted, so they released her.

I understand that some here may feel differently. Maybe I was hoodwinked by the remorse she showed at trial, but I don’t think she is a threat to society as a whole.

Now, I wish this standard applied equally across the board, however, and I realize that it does not. There are certainly many others in jail right now who are not a threat to society, and who didn’t get any special treatment.

Flame away…I’m sure I’ll be called racist for daring to say this.

I agree with you. I believe she will live with a tortured soul for the rest of her life.

It was a sickening accident. She needed to be held accountable. And she was. It's hardly uncommon to be released before the end of the sentence.

she only served 16 months, a 1 and 4 months.
The person she killed will do eternity in a casket because she made a mistake.
