Oath Keepers-linked attorney ruled incompetent to stand trial, will get mental treatment in custody

Source: CNN Politics

CNN — Kellye SoRelle, the woman who claimed to be general counsel for the right-wing Oath Keepers militia, will be held in federal custody for mental health treatment after a judge ruled Tuesday that she was incompetent to stand trial.

SoRelle is facing several charges related to the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, including felony charges of obstruction of an official proceeding and obstruction of justice. She has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

DC District Judge Amit Mehta has postponed SoRelle’s trial indefinitely, stating that based on reports from the defense and government medical experts, SoRelle is currently suffering from a mental disorder that that will hinder her ability to understand the legal proceedings.

It has not been determined where SoRelle will receive treatment. The facility must report every 60 days about the status of SoRelle’s condition and determine when she will be competent to stand trial.

"the woman who claimed to be general counsel for the right-wing Oath Keepers militia"

Also ... nowhere in the article does it actually confirm ... she's an attorney at all except the headline.

After J6 you might have noticed a story about an insurance company lawyer who filed a weird lawsuit in Texas to suspend the US government, citing Lord of the Rings.

She was co-counsel on that suit.

that Texas didn't allow the case to move forward all the way through decision, appeals etc. because most of Texas seems to be right along with the thinking that would embrace the "reasoning" and "claims" in that suit.

Mehta based his determination on SoRelle’s “motion for competency restoration” and reports from both the prosecution and defense that had separately concluded that SoRelle was “presently incompetent to stand trial.”

Those reports also indicated that SoRelle would likely regain competency “in the foreseeable future,” and Mehta found that there is a “substantial probability” that she will “attain the capacity to permit the proceedings to go forward.”

Mehta, a Barack Obama appointee, ordered SoRelle to be committed to federal authorities for “hospitalization for treatment in a suitable medical facility for the purposes of competency restoration” once space in such a program becomes available. Reports on her condition must be submitted to the judge every 60 days thereafter until she has “recovered to such an extent” that she can proceed with her trial.

The hope that you will not devalue people who are suffering from mental illness by lumping them in with large numbers of people that you don't like.

By saying as you did that people who have been charged and convicted in court are mentally ill when clearly they are NOT, you don't exhibit compassion for mentally ill people.

She is ill.
She is not ill because she holds political views you don't like.
She is not ill because she hung around people who hold political views you don't like.
They are not ill; especially they are not deemed ill because they simply hold political views you don't like.

She is ill.
She is being cared for.

Separate your humanity from your political dislikes, lest you lose your humanity by mixing them together.
