Donald Trump, allies will be booked on charges at Georgia jail, not court, sheriff says

Donald Trump and his 18 co-defendants in a Georgia racketeering case will be booked at the county jail − in contrast to the courthouse processing in his other three criminal cases − and could turn themselves in at any time, Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat's office announced Tuesday.
Trump was indicted Monday on conspiracy and other charges for trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election. His fellow defendants include lawyer Rudy Giuliani and former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.
Labat's office said in a statement bookings will happen at the Rice Street jail, although plans could change without notice. The jail is open 24 hours per day and the defendants could show up at any time, Labat said. At this point, based on guidance received from the district attorneys office and presiding judge, it is expected that all 19 defendants named in the indictment will be booked at the Rice Street Jail, the statement said.
But the sheriff added that arrangements are subject to change. "Due to the unprecedented nature of this case, some circumstances may change with little or no warning," the statement said. Trump's team has not disclosed his plans for booking or arraignment, which are technically separate events.

I hope they make Trump sit with the other prisoners before they "tag and bag" him.

(6,115 posts)But if they do this, how does it work? They still have to go in to be arraigned in front of a magistrate judge, right? So they are technically arrested and then set free until the arraignment? Is that routinely done? Who decides they can be free after arrest and until arraignment? Doesn't the magistrate judge decide on remand/no remand, bail conditions, etc?
Trying to figure out the logistics here.

(165,673 posts)When it comes to quirky shows like that or "WKRP in Cincinnati", etc., you can rarely if ever recapture the chemistry of the cast that made the show a hit.
ExWhoDoesntCare
(4,741 posts)And the writing is the #1 thing I've found lacking with bad reboots.
Chemistry comes from working together long enough and having great material to work with, more than anything. The original WKRP cast, for instance, was a bit awkward with each other at first, but spending more time working with each other ironed out the kinks. Meanwhile, the excellence of the writing sustained them over that hump.
I think one thing that made the original WKRP and Night Court successful was that the show creators were from the worlds they were writing about. Their input, week-to-week, kept the shows grounded in their own experiences in AM radio and night court. The new writers had no real experience with what the shows were about, so they couldn't create believable story lines or dialogue.
WKRP is a good example of why that experiences matters. The show became scary good in its last season, because it had a long story arc reflecting the beginnings of that transition from mom-and-pop owned radio to corporate-controlled radio. Only someone who had worked in that business for a long time would have seen what was happening--and understood the nuances of it so well. So it was still super-funny, but it was addressing some serious and relevant issues, too.
BumRushDaShow
(165,673 posts)you have to have someone in there (even if only as an "advisor" ) providing input on the setting (whether it's a "hospital/medical" show like M*A*S*H or some "local" but recognizable type business show like "Taxi", etc). And certainly court-related shows would fit that.
Otherwise it becomes disjointed to the viewers and a source of disbelief by those who actually work in those settings!

Anyway, it's like you said: Those doors clanged shut behind us, and it was indeed creepy to know that we were stuck in there with some unsavory characters.

(60,320 posts)It probably has already been planned that he will be booked and arraigned simultaneously at the Court House, with mug shot there too. I think that is probably best, purely for logistics.
But, ... the interesting question is posed: Can the rump convince a judge that he is capable of restraining his "speech" to civil standards. That is where he needs to be treated like other accused.

(15,339 posts)Trump got in the race. My wife and I both walked around like zombies, in shock after he was elected. We watched as he and his kids kept getting rich while he was in the White House. We shook our heads when he refused to take responsibility for anything.
He he has the blood of hundreds of thousands on his hands and he nearly ended this republic. I can remember weeping with my wife on January 6.
My fondest hope is to see the day Trump is sent to prison, hopefully for the rest of his life. He really IS too dangerous to be walking around free.
I got up on the post-election morning with a WTF!

He is a risk of juror intimidation.
Under Georgia Law, hes going to have to convince a judge that he wont try
To intimidate.
They wont let him out until he is tried.
tHROW his ass in a cell. Please.

(6,115 posts)They should, but they won't. Maybe not even if he starts intimidating witnesses in this case as well. He always gets special treatment.

(5,091 posts)In order to qualify for bail, you have to show that you aren't a flight risk, or a community risk , AND you can't be a risk of trying to intimidate jurors or the legal system.
That last criteria is Trump's biggest hurdle.
I say he won't get out on bail.

He and his minions must be CRUSHED for their attempted Insurrection. Thats in concrete. If we had a wholly sane electorate this would not exist - but we dont and it does.
