Grandson of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, says 'we're in the final chapter' in health update
Source: CNN Politics
CNN The grandson of former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter said its clear were in the final chapter in an interview with People published Saturday.
Jimmy Carter, 98, entered hospice care in February. The former president beat brain cancer in 2015 but faced a series of health scares in 2019, and consequentially underwent surgery to remove pressure on his brain.
Family and caregivers have been the only recent visitors to the Carters Georgia home, Josh Carter told People. But theres always somebody at the house to keep the Carters company, he said. CNN reached out to The Carter Center for comment on Saturday but did not receive a response.
Hes still fully Jimmy Carter, Josh Carter said of his grandfather. I mean hes almost 99 years old, but he fully understands (how many well wishes hes received) and has felt the love. Meanwhile, Josh Carter said his grandmother Rosalynn Carter, who has dementia, is cognizant of her diagnosis and even signed off on the May press release in which it was announced. She still knows who we are, for the most part that we are family, Josh Carter said. My grandmother is still able to form new memories.

(8,353 posts)Years ago, read a bio about his post presidential work to help feed people in 3rd world nations. He gathered the experts needed to help specific areas, and got them in the doors of leaders of impoverished nations. The article voiced that it seemed possible he really only wanted to be president because it would provide the gravitas he needed to get thru the doors of hesitant foreign leaders and introduce them to people who could help food production in their specific locations/conditions. Having a former US President ask to see you must have been a flattering thing to many people in positions of local power in some pretty hostile environments.
That he and his life partner switched to building homes after the post presidential glam wore off is testament to the depth of their faith and sense of obligation to be useful to those who have little.

East as President. He saved the Ottawa Valley from a nuclear meltdown. Action man. Humble and brilliant. Compassionate. Family man. Great President. Walking the walk religious follower. He will be greatly missed.

He was my first vote in 1976, and I have NEVER regretted it or been ashamed to admit it. (How many people will be proud to say they ever voted for the FOOL*? (yeah, too damn many....) But the Carter presidency has stood the test of time, and I think eventually, historians will say, as they have with Harry Truman, that he was one of the best of the 20th century.

(89,122 posts)When reagan was about to retire, he spoke openly about hitting the "mashed potato circuit", heading out on speaking tours that paid big bucks. Of course, his senility got the best of him before he could cash in as he'd planned on doing. Mercenary schmuck! When Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter left the White House, they kept working for the greater good, and have never stopped since that long-ago day. It just seemed like such poetic justice, and karma, that reagan wound up a pathetic shriveled mess in a puddle of drool, helplessly wheeled around by servants as his brain dissolved away. I remember reading how, as he deteriorated, there was a snow globe of the White House close by on the table where he could see it. He noticed it and asked an aide "does that have something to do with me?"
Amazing. True poetic justice indeed.
In contrast, Jimmy and Rosalyn got busy building houses for Habitat for Humanity over the next several decades.
I think we all know who'll stand taller in history.

I was riveted when he brokered Egyptian and Israeli leaders signing peace treaty.
Come to think of it, I believe (in my opinion) he is the biggest Democratic luminary to pass when that day comes.

(3,781 posts)Had the hostages come home safely in the fall of 1980, Reagan may not have won election. We will never really know.
What we do know is that the Reagan campaign illegally made a deal with Iran in order to seal his election...much as Nixon did with North Vietnam in 1968.
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/18/us/politics/jimmy-carter-october-surprise-iran-hostages.html
I was proud to have President Carter in the White House...speaking unpopular truths about oil dependence, race relations, and other topics. He did not insult us with happy platitudes. He did not give a wink to the KKK by launching his campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi (where sixteen years prior, three civil rights workers were murdered while trying to register black voters).
Reagan was a prop for the wealthy. He continued the tradition of using racist dog-whistles to gain the votes of poor and middle-class white voters. He was the precursor to the dumpster fire that is the current GOP.
Thank you, Jimmy Carter for doing the right things, speaking the truth, and leading through example. You represent what the Presidency should alway be...humble, respectful, honest.
