White House To Boehner: Obamacare Not Part Of Fiscal Cliff Deal
Source: Huffington Post
The White House and congressional Democrats are balking at the idea, floated by House Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday, that changes to the president's signature health care law should be on the table during lame-duck talks over taxes and the deficit.
An administration official told The Huffington Post that the president would oppose involving the Affordable Care Act in the negotiations taking place to stave off the so-called "fiscal cliff." A top Senate Democratic aide called the idea "absolutely" a non-starter.
* **
The comments came in response to an op-ed, written by Boehner for the Cincinnati Enquirer, in which he declared that the Affordable Care Act "has to stay on the table as both parties discuss ways to solve our nations massive debt challenge."
The speaker has made this point before, holding 33 votes during the past two years to wipe the law from the books. His appetite for this specific fight seemed to wane a bit after the 2012 elections, when he told ABC News that Obamacare was now the law of the land. But he quickly walked back that remark, and his op-ed ends the talk, for the time being, that House Republicans have given up on the idea of full repeal.

The House Republicans have apparently decided to triple down on crazy. I guess there plan is to be even less productive than the 112th Congress, hope that Americans don't turn out and blame Democrats for the poison atmosphere in D.C., then with the help of SuperPAC money in a midterm election, take over the Senate. So, watch the Republicans get even more racist, anti-woman, anti-immigrant, anti-tax than before, and hope that Americans and the media give them a free pass and blame Democrats for not being bi-partisan enough.

(53,661 posts)The Democrats who want to preserve these programs will get out and vote. OFA must continue through 2014, because those who stayed home in 2010 for the same reasons being offered now, will be swayed again. The people who stood in line and elected Obama this year, must be helped to stay active. Those who have given up, aren't going to get the job done. The GOP is not going to give up one bit, but Obama cannot do this by himself.

(15,438 posts)And then the threats will follow . . . but there's no more threatening holding out their vote for him. Instead, they have to attack other Democratic voters and discredit Democratic pols. Too bad for them, President Obama was well aware of their temper tantrums and fickle natures (he got a good taste of it in 2010 although they all SWEAR they had voted for him, heck, even canvased for him and registered new voters for him - uh-huh) and that's why he solved that problem by broadening his voting coalition. I bet that strategy made them plenty angry.

How about sticking to the point and discussing issues instead of attacking others on the board?

(15,438 posts)who clearly can't stand President Obama, and when I fight back, I'm the one creating a division within our community. Is that how it works in your upside world?
Everyone has a right to express their views and thoughts, and NOWHERE in my post can you claim that I've stated otherwise, but it's pretty clear you don't believe that's a two-way street. Why? Am I not worthy?
How about you take your own advice and YOU stick to the point and discuss issues instead of attacking ME, a fellow DUer, on this board? It would lend more credibility to your oh so sage advice.

Their objectives are not driven by financial concerns, because most of their positions make the financial situation worse. They are driven by ideological views, and it is exactly those ideological views that were defeated. Not to mention they are out of touch with reality and those ideas simply don't add up or square with one another.
Social Security:
Not part of the debt at all, so simple to solve - raise the cap
Obama Care:
Actually SAVES the government money, AND society, including individuals substantial money
Want to save so more? -Implement single payer and SAVE estimated 30% !!!
Want to really cut some billions??
$ 500 billion per year form the military.
$150 billion invest in country infrastructure to off set the loss.

(32,139 posts)This is not an issue of pathological shyness or poor negotiation skills.
Why the HELL doesn't he consider our already meager Social Security and Medicare safety nets - that help safeguard millions from poverty, despair, and death - important enough to take off the table?

(7,403 posts)So it makes no sense to have that as part of the "fiscal cliff" deal, especially since CBO has scored it as a deficit reducer. As it kicks in we need to monitor it closely and compare results with projections and adjust as needed but all of that is at least 3 years down the road. So far it has been a huge plus for me because I was able to keep my daughter on my health insurance plan and with her pre-existing conditions no insurance would have been available, except possibly Medicaid which would cost the taxpayers several thousands of dollars a year. People need to think before they go off the deep end. Any parent that has a child approaching adulthood with a pre-existing condition loves ACA for this feature alone. It is a huge deal!!!!

(811 posts)we will accept some changes to lower it even further if you accept.
For example, including a Public Option with a 95% MRI and negotiating rights would lower Medical costs significantly. Although switching to a Medicare for All program which has overwhelming support would increase efficiently and lower costs exponentially. The impact would be that insurance companies would have to shift their emphasis, but they could easily shift to Medicare supplemental insurance as so many have already done.
So, Mr. Bohner, we would be willing to adjust the ACA in these areas. If you are really serious about lowering the National Debt.

(15,369 posts)The election proved that Obamacare is popular and that you are not.
Not only did President Obama win the electoral vote by a WIDE margin, he also won more than 52% of the popular vote - and that percentage is still going up as the last votes are being counted. The GOP may still be in the majority in the House, but by a quite a few seats less than before.
All that Dems have to do is simply to sit tight for the New Congress to be sworn in. Perhaps there are a few Rs whose re-elections were a LOT tougher than they expected who might see the handwriting on the wall once some of the crazies like Walsh and West are totally outta there. I'm not seriously expecting much, if any, of that because there are still too many crazy Rs left. But one can always hope for a mild outbreak of sanity in the GOP, even if that is extremely unlikely.
But you, your colleagues-in-arms and Norquist just do NOT "get" it. It wasn't just your messengers, although they were indeed awful.
It was the entirety of your message.

What do the numbers show would be the best balanced approach to resolving the mess and getting our nation our from under so much debt yet leaving intact as much as possible our varies social programs and our national defense?

(2,286 posts)Studies show that it will actually LOWER the debt when fully implemented.

(17,387 posts)The CBO studies show that if fully implement, HCR will reduce the deficit. Indeed, analyses of Romney's proposal to repeal HCR and reduce the deficit often noted that these were two contradictory goals.

No repeal of the ACA. No cuts to SS benefits. No cuts to Medicare benefits. No raising of elligibility ages. And no extension of the Bush/Obama tax cuts. Those are fixed.

(3,041 posts)They say, we asked for Obamacare to be on the table and you refused so now it's Social Security and Medicare. One or the other, or we don't budge. And they think Dems will cave because that's what we've always done.
I really hope this time will be different. The fiscal cliff is a hoax and scare politics need to be hit head-on.
