WASHINGTON, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Combative right-wing Republican Jim Jordan postponed a second vote for speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday after coming up short in the first vote, raising questions about his prospects for seizing the top job. The Ohio lawmaker said the House would vote in a second round at 11 a.m. ET (1500 GMT) on Wednesday.
Jordan, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, won 200 votes, short of the 217 needed to win the job, in a first vote on Tuesday afternoon as 20 of his fellow Republican voted against him. All 212 Democrats voted for their leader, Hakeem Jeffries.
The loss means that for now the House remains leaderless, as it has been since a handful of Republican insurgents engineered Kevin McCarthy's ouster as speaker two weeks ago. That has left Congress unable to respond to wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, with just a month to go before the U.S. government faces another partial shutdown deadline. Jordan's office had said to expect a second vote on Tuesday, but postponed action after several hours of closed-door meetings with fellow Republicans.
It was not clear whether he would pick up more support or see his opposition grow. McCarthy never got less than 200 votes in 15 rounds over four days in January. "We're making progress. I feel good about it," Jordan told reporters. "We're gonna keep going." If Jordan prevails, a conservative who has spent years fighting with leaders of his own party could end up in one of the most powerful jobs in Washington, putting him second in line for the presidency behind the vice president.

WASHINGTON, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Combative right-wing Republican Jim Jordan failed to win a first vote on Tuesday to serve as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, but more votes were expected to follow that could wear down his opponents. Jordan's office said another vote was expected on Tuesday. It was not clear whether he would pick up more support or see his opposition grow. McCarthy never got less than 200 votes in 15 rounds over four days in January.
"Even Pope Francis, it took him five ballots to get elected," said Republican Representative Nicole Malliotakis. "So let's just see how the rest of the day goes." If Jordan prevails, a conservative who has spent years fighting with leaders of his own party could end up in one of the most powerful jobs in Washington, putting him second in line for the presidency behind the vice president.

Seven Republicans voted for Steve Scalise, the No. 2 House Republican whose own bid for speaker fell apart last week and six voted instead for McCarthy. Three Republicans voted for Lee Zeldin, who retired from Congress in January, and Republican Representatives Tom Cole, Tom Emmer, Thomas Massie and Mike Garcia got one vote each.

(7,395 posts)Still needed 14 more votes and several more days, along with a lot of concessions.
Almost the same number voted for neither, like what happened in January with McCarthy.

House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy of California is making his second run at the speakership, but he is facing resistance from enough hardliners in his party that he failed to seize the gavel on the first ballot, with 203 votes to 212 votes for Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York.
Nineteen Republicans voted for neither nominee; 10 of those voted for Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., a protest candidate against McCarthy. It's the first time a speaker hasn't been elected on the first ballot in 100 years.

(7,604 posts)for their abject stupidity when choosing Jordan as their leader. They KNOW he's an awful person in a leadership role, but they'll cave and vote for him anyway. They also know that Jordan will be recalled within weeks and ousted as Speaker because he cannot work with Democrats. He's toxic. The one person who is pushing for Jordan to become Speaker is Trump. He is on his "retribution" tour right now, and wants to start by keeping the GOP House in utter disarray. So Captain Toxic is pushing for Congressman Toxic to become Toxic Speaker. And it's all happening on TV.

(165,432 posts)he would lose 5 more votes. This was mainly because there are a number of them protesting the Rules change - particularly the vacate-the-chair one and have threatened to withhold votes unless some Rules changes happen.

Check it out:

I tried the same thing with Dick Durbin in Illinois with my former Ohio address and got through.
