WASHINGTON (AP) Rep. Jim Jordan made an impassioned push to become House speaker ahead of a Friday vote even as his Republican colleagues were explicitly warning the hard-edged ally of Donald Trump that no more threats or promises can win over their support.
The House is scheduled to convene for Jordans third try at the gavel, but Republicans have no realistic or workable plan to unite the fractured GOP majority, elect a new speaker and return to the work of Congress that has been languishing since hard-liners ousted Kevin McCarthy at the start of the month.
The American people are hungry for change, Jordan said at the Capitol.
Drawing on his Ohio roots, the far-right Jordan, who is popular with the GOPs activist base of voters, positioned his long-shot campaign alongside the history of American innovators including the Wright brothers, urging his colleagues to elect him to the speakership.

During his presser, half his remarks were some nonsense gish gallop about the Wright Brothers.
"Moderate" (R) Brian Fitzpatrick here in PA (PA-1) had voted for Gymsuit the first 2 rounds (which will really make him a target by the Democrat expected to run against him in what is a Biden district) but he very publicly indicated that he wouldn't do so a 3rd time.

(54,049 posts)They are a plague. In government for almost 60 years in some form or another. I think a Democrat held that seat for 2 years of the last 40, and that was another Irish name, Patrick Murphy. Female candidates can't unseat him, Italians no help. The GOP weasels right with left head-fakes really well.

Ah, because legislation is initiated in the HOUSE, DUMBASS.
What a waste of a human body.

(7,243 posts)This morning at a press conference Jordan apparently compared his bid for speaker to the span of time that it took the Wright Brothers first flight to the moon landing in 1969.
It's his go-to story. Comes from his tour of Dayton Ohio home of the Wright Bros. At end of tour he tells the story about a photo of the Wright Bros plane from its first flight at Kitty Hawk NC in 1903. And then a photo of Chuck Yeager from 1947, when Yeager became first pilot in history confirmed to have exceeded the speed of sound in level flight.
Jordan then professes an epiphany that only 22 years later, in 1969 Neil Armstrong (who lived/was born in Jordan's district) first stepped foot on the moon.
Lovely story - but then Jordan tries to relate it to his quest for the speakership.
Even Fox News questioned what the story had to do with Jordan or his speaker race.
Apparently it's his go-to story as he cited it in one of the impeachment cases to argue against impeachment.
Seems to me that Jordan would have tell the story backwards for it to make any sense. He'd have to start with unwinding NASA, then preventing Yeager from breaking the sound barrier and blocking the Wright Bros from flying at Kitty Hawk.
