House Republicans reject Jim Jordan a third time for the speaker's gavel as opposition deepens

WASHINGTON (AP) Rep. Jim Jordan failed badly Friday on a third ballot for the House speakers gavel, rejected by even more Republicans from the conservative mainstream who warned the hard-edged ally of Donald Trump that no threats or promises could win their support.
The Republicans have no realistic or workable plan to unite the fractured GOP majority, elect a new speaker and return to the work of Congress that has been languishing since hard-liners ousted Kevin McCarthy at the start of the month.
In all, Jordan lost 25 Republican colleagues, leaving him far from the majority needed.
Ahead of the vote, Jordan showed no signs of stepping aside, insisting at a Capitol press conference: The American people are hungry for change.

Meanwhile, McCarthy has got to be thinking maybe it wasn't so bad having 15 votes and being Speaker for 9 months.

(8,812 posts)received 16 more votes than Jordan, and only a couple short of what's needed since there were absences.
I guess it doesn't feed the narrative that the failure to produce a speaker is the fault of the democrats?

(13,017 posts)McCarthy got .6 of a month for each attempted vote session. So if Gym terrifies enough GQP over the weekend to get the vote on the 4th try, he will serve 2.4 months. Just in time for GQP to destroy Christmas, but we get to call it Merry, or maybe in time to start off a new year. We have had fucked up New Years since 2016 elections, so why not start off another one with GQP destruction of the country. Happy New year Yall, this is gonna be the one thats great.
The change the American People are so much begging for. Great start for 2024, with a for the people GQP running like a fine watch.
Change? What he, the GQP, mean by change for the American People, in coins for pay. And tax most of that for their salaries and pensions.
We gettin great yet?

(13,017 posts)Based on attempts. The GQP Terrorist Group, MAGA, have the weekend to attack those 25 with threats to their families. Hell the may take hostages and follow other terrorist tactics. I am hopeful this slight uptick each attempt continues, and some spines are strengthened in the GQP and say enough of this Putin shit. This attempt after attempt just shows they will only do the same shit in 2024 they did in 2020. They will make any outcome to be in their favor, whatever it takes. With no repercussions for their evil to take power, we will face every outcome of any elections or votes with this over and over. Until the GQP destroyed.
Gym needs prison, not power. Put him in charge of prison showers, where he has skills.

(10,597 posts)Love this identifier, just what does a mainstream conservative believe in in 2023? Outlawing abortion, banning books, preventing care to transgender individuals, incorporating school curriculum that distorts actual history, I could list another ten things that certainly are not "mainstream". What happened when all they cared about was tax cuts for the ruling class? I guess they already won that battle ten or 20 times over.

(9,065 posts)They sure are! After 10 months of this ridiculous carnival sideshow of Republican "leadership" in the house, they would like to see a little real adult leadership for a change.
And McCarthy says of Jordan, "He's straightforward, honest, and reliable." Can you believe that!
Three strikes in one sentence! You're out!
