(10,008 posts)I've adored Matthew Perry for all of these years.
Unlike others on this board, Friends is one of my favorite shows ever. I had such joy watching it in the 90's with groups of my friends and now the repeats.
The show got me through many down times. During the 2016-2017 dt campaign and the aftermath Friends was my go to show to lift my spirits.
I got his book as soon as it was released and a friend and I went to see him at the Los Angeles Festival of Books in April of this year.
His addiction was one of the worse I've ever seen. I hope he finally has peace.
R.I.P., Matthew. I loved your "Chandler".

(2,248 posts)I also loved Friends and always thought Chandler had a special poignance. If you havent seen him in The West Wing or Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, I think you might enjoy him there, as well.

(52,008 posts)and Studio 60. I especially liked him in Mr. Sunshine also starring Allison Janey. I never understood why that show got cancelled after just one season. Honestly, I never cared for Friends though.
What a shock, he was so young.

(970 posts)I adored Chandler! Like you, that show got me through many hard times. I never missed an episode. Something about Chandler was very endearing to me. I would have loved to have had him as a friend or a brother.
I really liked Matthew Perry and am sorry to hear this news.
You expressed beautifully how I feel when you said:
"R.I.P., Matthew. I loved your 'Chandler'."

(2,980 posts)in 2013/14 dealing with lymphoma. She has a disability and the remote wasn't very accessible to her, and one channel would play a lot of Friends episodes in a row (so she didn't have to worry it would turn into something disturbing), and she found it a nice, familiar, comforting distraction. She also watched Friends reruns when she came home and recuperated another few months. Chandler is her favorite character, and she and her (much!) younger sister continue to be huge fans.
This show has entertained (and comforted) so many people around the world, and as we saw on the reunion show, even Malala loves it!
Thank you Matthew for helping provide my older daughter such a needed psychological escape from a very challenging situation... and for providing so many happy hours for both my girls!
[My older daughter watched Hallmark Christmas shows to recover from the 2016 election!]

(7,940 posts)He did lots of rehab, I've heard both "drowning" and "cardiac arrest". That's nightmarish to consider if he was taking a private swim, had a medical emergency, and couldn't exit the pool. (I don't know if that's exactly what happened, but only my speculation.)

(21,918 posts)of his hot tub is very large - small pool size. The water was up to his neck. Cardiac arrest is a blackout - no warning. If I had been sitting in a hot tub, I would have been dead immediately.

(7,940 posts)Hopefully it was quick. Drowning would have made little difference if he was alone and had a cardiac arrest and slipped under before he could reach a phone if one was nearby.
I worked at a casino boat once, and we had a local teacher who visited regularly and was pulling into the parking lot one afternoon. Security watched her car drive straight over the curb at the edge of the lot and into the river without braking or turning - they speculated she had a similar medical emergency and we all hoped she expired before she hit the water.
(One of the security guards was ready to dive in to try to help her, but was prevented as the river current was way too dangerous. They dredged but never found the car.)

A significant contributing factor to his health, he told The Washington Post while promoting the book, was the unquenchable drive for fame that had initially boosted his career but soon careened out of control. I have a never-ending need for attention, but its never the right kind of attention, he said. It didnt work. It didnt fix that hole in me, and that was surprising to me.
Matthew Langford Perry was born in Williamstown, Mass., on Aug. 19, 1969. His parents divorced before he turned 1, and he spent much of his early life in Ottawa. His stepfather, Keith Morrison, was a broadcast journalist, and his mother, Suzanne Perry Morrison, was a press aide to Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.

(21,092 posts)Drugs and alcohol are hard on your body. You can look fit on the outside and be falling apart on the inside. Taylor Hawkins, drummer for the Foo Fighters, was thin and ripped, but his autopsy showed that his heart was DOUBLE the size of a healthy man.
Add to that stewing in a hot tub. Blood vessels dilate, blood pressure drops, you can get arrhythmias, even pass out. It happened to me twice taking hot showers. I woke up in a heap un the bathtub.

(4 posts)Hot tubs pose the danger of getting so relaxed and sleepy, add a little liquor or pills, and you've got a scenario of danger while falling asleep in the bath water. RIP Matthew Perry. Your fans and "Friends" will miss you.

He was just amazing in it. I'd bet that Matthew just loved that role.
