'We're ungovernable': House Republicans nix votes on two funding bills as shutdown deadline nears

WASHINGTON House Republicans closed out the week by canceling votes on two party-line funding bills in the span of 48 hours, a setback for new Speaker Mike Johnson and a sign of persisting dysfunction in the chamber ahead of a key funding deadline.
They pulled a transportation-housing bill late Tuesday as some coastal Republicans opposed cuts to Amtrak. And they yanked a financial services and general government measure on Thursday morning that included divisive anti-abortion language.
It's a step backward for Johnson, R-La., who had hoped to show progress on appropriations bills championed by his party's conservative wing in order to secure their votes to pass a short-term bill that would keep the government open beyond the Nov. 17 deadline. And it shows how ungovernable the House continues to be after right-wing Republicans ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy over complaints about his handling of government funding.
"I don't think the Lord Jesus himself could manage this group," said Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Texas. He added that he would pray for the new speaker as the House adjourned for a long weekend. "Were still dealing with the same divisions we always have had," said another House Republican. "Were ungovernable."

(37,971 posts)...the same reason Republicans have never been shy about launching multiple investigations of things where they turned up nothing previously (e.g., Vince Foster's death):
They're fishing around for something -- anything -- they might be able to use against Democrats, and, with a far greater likelihood of success, they're fishing around for headlines and coverage and clips they can use in fundraising and campaign ads.

(8,359 posts)Hard working federal employees will likely be shut out soon. The members of the public who rely on those people for the essential services they provide the tax paying public will be SOL. Public safety will be at risk. But the GOP Louse Caucus is busy biting and feeding on taxpayers, making useless gestures of cutting pay for hard working cabinet members and other administration appointees to $1 and harassing ANYONE with the last name of Biden, to do the actual work of governing.
The GOP Louse Members are NOT there to work. They are there to draw good pay, hope they get to serve 5 years and get good pensions, and act out on all their infantile, unaddressed psychological shortcomings.
FIRE THEM in 2024. Fire EVERY one of the GOP Louse caucus!

(7,593 posts)It's would probably be the Republican's best interests to pursue a dozen or so votes from centrists Democrats and sideline their extremists such as Boebart, Gaetz and Greene.
The ironic thing is that McCarthy was in a reasonable position to do that. Being from California, McCarthy is unlikely to lose a primary to a far right challenger and he is also capable of raising large sums of money. Mike Johnson's ability to raise money is much more uncertain and Louisiana Republicans are much more likely than California ones to punish someone who moves to the center.

(23,676 posts)But their prime directive (part of the coup attempt that never stopped) is to grind government to a halt so that some dictator can take over.
And they're not exactly thinking this through, because dictators purge their ranks and they, themselves meet pretty ugly ends.
But hey, it's a cult. Have no regard for the price that's paid sooner or later.
