Kentucky state GOP passes resolution for 'wrongfully held' suspects in Jan. 6 riot

The governing body of the Republican Party of Kentucky passed a resolution Saturday claiming many people charged with crimes related to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol have been wrongfully held. It recognizes citizens who have been held without due process after the attempted insurrection led by supporters of former Republican President Donald Trump, who has falsely asserted he won the 2020 presidential election.
The resolution is identical to one filed by Sen. Lindsey Tichenor, R-Smithfield, in the Kentucky Senate on Friday. Bobbie Coleman, chair of the Hardin County GOP who read the resolution at Saturdays meeting, told the Herald-Leader the vote was tight: The Republican State Central Committee, the governing body of the Republican Party of Kentucky, adopted the resolution by a razor-thin 34-32 vote. Im not saying that not everybody was innocent, but theres a lot that are, Coleman said.
If the justice system was doing it properly and constitutionally, then the ones that deserve to be in there (jail) would be in there and the ones that were were led in or were just trespassing wouldnt. She said that 99 percent of people who attended the rally preceding the Capitol riot were just there to practice their First Amendment rights.
As of December 2023, about 1,240 people have been arrested, according to the New York Times. The Department of Justice reported in October that nearly 600 people had pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the Capitol riot and nearly 100 had been convicted by a jury. The New York Times reported two people have been acquitted.

(17,440 posts)think its okay to break into the capitol, spray police with bear spray, beat up police, break windows and break into offices and steal objects, spread feces on walls and wherever. I bet if something similar happened in their state house they would not be pleased and would have those folks arrested.

(22,753 posts)the post said that the First Amendment right to free speech doesn't cover actions. How would these criminals disguised as elected officials act if a riotous mob attacked their work place, or worse, their homes because of a deluded belief that their government is against them?
How do you deal with stupidity? How do you get reliable, mature, honorable, upright people to run for public office? Why are so many rwnj getting into office? Do the idiots who vote for them really think the rwnj have a plan to put a better government in place? I know for sure that if the rwnj get total power, they will either back off their asinine rhetoric or dismantle what we have and run amok.
This isn't a video game or a cartoon. It is real life with real life consequences for every single person.

(6,115 posts)It's just making a public record. It has no enforcement mechanism. They're putting themselves on the record as being pro-insurrectionist. Not a good look.
I know it is no consolation now, but I'm wondering how history will record all of this. If we remain a democracy, I'm guessing history won't be kind to these motherfuckers. If we turn into a fascist state, history won't record any of this accurately.

(10,290 posts)And, as far as I am concerned, once that orange gibbon is convicted for treason and locked away, the DOJ should make sure that the Kentucky legislature is aware that they are being watched. CLOSELY. Since they put themselves on the record as being against the punishment of law breakers and treasonous bastards. I would hope that the DOJ would maintain that they are watching to see if the politicians do more than agree with the treason that happened on January 6th.
