Syria unrest: Arab League 'extends mission by a month'

The Arab League is extending its mission in Syria for another month, officials say, despite widespread criticism of its operation.

The league is also expected to approve an increase in the number of observers at a meeting in Cairo.

The observers were criticised for not stopping violence the country has been subjected to for almost a year.

Meanwhile, Syrian rebels said that army deserters had briefly taken control of much of the Damascus suburb of Douma on Saturday night after fierce fighting with the security services.
