Jimmy Carter, America's longest living president, is marking 1 year in hospice care

Sunday marks one year since former President Jimmy Carter, now 99, entered hospice care.

The 39th president was diagnosed with cancer that had spread to his brain back in 2015. After a series of short hospital stays, Carter opted last year “to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention, according to a statement by the Carter Center at the time.

A year later, the former president continues to be at home with his family, the Carter family said in a statement to USA TODAY. "The Carter family is grateful for the many expressions of love they have received and the continued respect for their privacy during this time. The family is pleased that his decision last year to enter hospice care has sparked so many family discussions across the country on an important subject," the family said.

In recent years, three out of four hospice patients spent less than three months in end-of-life care, according to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.

Jimmy Carter should be a great reminder to the media that longevity cannot be predicted on their timetable. Lonestarblue Feb 2024 #15

* because Medicaid wouldn't pay for hospice care "indefinitely" and it would run its course, then be withdrawn. But then it would become a medical necessity a few months later, and they would be back on hospice care again.

Thank heaven for the skilled hospice workers... their dedication... their kindness... and the care that they provide to our loved ones and to the family too!

And my neighbor. We should learn lessons from hospice and apply to all illnesses.

And that's why i hope it happens while a Democrat in the White House.

I thought it was shameful the way RBG's funeral was handled while Chump was there. All they could think about was naming her replacement, and they didn't allow a respectable period of mourning for her. I don't think Chump even went to her funeral. She deserved way better, as does our former President Jimmy Carter.

... when Chump announced Amy Coney Barrett would be replacing RBG on the bench?

I don't think Justice Ginsberg had even been laid to rest yet, but they couldn't wait to announce her replacement. That was the same reception where all those Repukes (including Chump) got exposed to Covid. It serves them right.

He'd last for so long? Especially after Rosalynn died.

I know that he must be secure in the knowledge that he lived a good life, full of meaning.

Biden has lived a healthy active life, and there is no reason for the media’s obsession that he would quickly die in office if re-elected. What an admirable man Jimmy Carter is and has been his whole life. I wish him an easy passing whenever that is.
