New Records Show Supreme Court's Sonia Sotomayor Took Unusual Step Of Traveling With A Medic

Source: Huffington Post

In February 2018, a medic from Grand Junction, Colorado, accompanied Sotomayor on a trip she made to southern Florida, according to the records.

On a three-day book tour with stops in Illinois and Tennessee in October of that year, the Marshals Service incurred costs for “baggage (medic),” which could refer to medical personnel or be a more benign reference to medical equipment in the justice’s luggage. Sotomayor was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 7 and gives herself insulin shots multiple times a day.

...snip...

In 2021 and 2022, Sotomayor made at least four trips — to Florida, New York and Puerto Rico — in which the Marshals Service mentioned baggage containing “medical gear,” or redacted a description of “baggage/medical supplies.”

...snip...

There are towering stakes for Sotomayor’s ability to remain a Supreme Court justice. At 69, she is beyond conventional retirement age and is the oldest of three Democratic-appointed justices remaining on the court.

in the lame duck session. At least we have a Democratic Senate. Unless either Manchin or Synema are in need of some attention.

AND the misogyny. How old is Alito or Thomas? Or any of the other male justices? Whoever is putting this out there is just trying to push her off the court, thinking *rump is going to Prez, and giving him another SCOTUS seat. Damn... the way these R's are acting, I want to ask... what do they know that we don't? Do they have this election rigged in such a way they're sure a Blue Wave won't swamp them? Are they planning an actual shooting coup if T doesn't win? Is there another coup from the old PNAC squad beneath T's coup? I really don't like the way these R's are coming off lately.

He said this after he was confirmed...

"The liberals made my life miserable for 43 years," a former clerk remembered Thomas – who was 43 years old when confirmed – saying, according to The New York Times. "And I'm going to make their lives miserable for 43 years."

I guess that means we have 11 more years to go... we need to increase the number of justices on the court!

. . . Sotomayor's "affliction" is manageable. Which is not the case with what afflicts Justice Thomas, Justice Alito, Justice Beer-Bong, Justice Speaking-in-Tongues . . .

not about her age. There is no mechanism here for Republicans pushing her off the court because of health problems or age. They will be happy if she doesn't step down while a Democratic president and Senate would replace her.

After RGB Democrats will be concerned if she might not last the 4-8-12 years after Biden, whenever that is. I don't want Trump or his ilk appointing any more justices.

"medic" could mean either medical supplies of medic, so it is unknown how that phrase was used. Assuming the reference was to a "medic" makes it sound much more serious. Lots of people travel with medical supplies. Certainly does not mean she is in bad shape health wise. A Type 1 diabetic whose diabetes is under control may be healthier than someone who is not a Type 1 diabetic and who does not does not have to pay attention to their diet and health habits.

could be considered "medical supplies," especially by a bunch of right-wing SS agents (which most are).

I've been one for 41 years now. Yes we always travel with some equipment. The blood glucose meter, and it sounds like she uses an insulin pump, that is clearly a medical device.

What's the purpose of this post? Just more ageism. Before long we will be told that everyone in the Biden family and administration are too damn old.

I'm an EMT and I understand that Type I and Type II diabetes are different, however, they are managed readily with the bulk of the management falling on the patient. She's been living with it for nearly 70 years, she knows what she's doing.

My wife is insulin-dependent Type II, takes three blood glucose readings (finger sticks) and five shots per day per day. We never travel past the end of our driveway without a cooler; frozen ice blocks; several pre-filled syringes; screw-on single use needles; all the stuff needed to a blood glucose reading and injection; plus 15-gram packs of glucagon in case of a hypoglycemic episode. For a three-day trip from our home in rural VA to visit our daughter in DC, we take a cooler the size we would take on a picnic.
