At least 104 people were killed and 760 injured in a chaotic incident where Israel Defense Forces opened fire as hungry Palestinian civilians were gathering around food aid trucks, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza.

Panic was caused by IDF opening fire as people waited for food, while many casualties were from aid trucks accidentally ramming people, eyewitness says. At least 104 people were killed and 760 injured in a chaotic incident where Israel Defense Forces opened fire as hungry Palestinian civilians were gathering around food aid trucks, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza.

CNN is unable to independently confirm the figures and the Israeli military has given a different account of the circumstances.

What we know:

Civilians had swarmed around newly arrived aid trucks in the hope of getting food, when Israeli tanks and drones started shooting at the people in Haroun Al Rasheed Street in western Gaza City, in the Sheikh Ajleen area.

As the aid trucks tried to escape the area, others were accidentally rammed, causing further deaths and injuries, an eyewitness told CNN.

What the IDF says:

An Israeli official told CNN IDF troops did use live fire on people surrounding aid truck as "the crowd approached the forces in a manner that posed a threat to the troops, who responded to the threat with live fire. The incident is under review."

Israeli government spokesperson Avi Hyman also told reporters that the incident was "obviously a tragedy, but we're not sure of the specifics quite yet."

What Hamas says:

Hamas senior member Izzat Al-Risheq warned that Thursday's incident could lead to the failure of ongoing talks aiming at the release of hostages and a ceasefire.

5. The situation gets worse and worse every day. IDF/Israel, opening fire on starving people trying to get food?

Insane. Why not organize the process when food trucks come in instead of opening fire on starving people trying to get food.

Maybe get UN troops there to handle the arrival and dispersal of aid when the trucks arrive as the IDF has shown their first inclination is to open fire on starving people.

My God. It's just needlessly tragic. Palestinian lives can just be instantly ended...just like that.
