Syria unrest: Saudis pull out of Arab League mission

Saudi Arabia has pulled out of the Arab League monitoring mission in Syria, criticising Damascus for failing to act to stop violence against protesters.

Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal called on the international community to put more pressure on the regime.

He was speaking at an Arab League meeting in Cairo, which is expected to extend the Syria mission for a month.

Critics have said the 165-strong mission has done nothing to stop a 10-month crackdown on protesters.

Have they actively worked against Kurdish interests? Though founded in 1945, I'm unfamiliar with the league's role in North Africa or the Mid East.

2. I was hoping to see the Arab League have some real impact on the situation.

Beyond keeping a relatively global and regional focus on the Assad regime - a good thing - not sure what effect they've had otherwise.

(aside) It's been a learning curve for me. I was admittedly somewhat hazy on the regional relationships. The 'Arab Spring' was an eye opener.

4. Arabs to call for Syria unity government, elections: draft

CAIRO (Reuters) - Arab League foreign ministers were voting on Sunday on draft recommendations to end violence in Syria and create a unity government within two months to prepare for early parliamentary and presidential elections.

The ministers were discussing the wording of a final statement based on 15 draft recommendations.

The draft, obtained by Reuters, includes a call for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to give his top deputy the power to deal with a unity government during the transitional period.

The unity government would be responsible for setting up an independent commission of inquiry into violations committed against Syrian citizens during the 10 month uprising against Assad's rule and restoring security and stability in Syria.

The draft pledges Arab support for the unity government as well as helping fund and support a complete overhaul of the internal security forces in Syria.

A clash between Syrian forces and army defectors erupted Sunday in a suburb of the tightly held capital of Damascus, adding urgency just as the Arab League was extending an observers' mission that so far has failed to end long months of bloody violence.

The two events outlined how an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad that started with mass popular protests is moving now toward an armed conflict that could draw international intervention—an outcome the Arab League is trying to avoid.

Arab League foreign ministers, meeting in Cairo, extended the much-criticized observers mission for another month, officials from the 22-member organization said. The league will add more observers and provide them with additional resources, the officials said.

The officials said the United Nations would train the observers.
