Kemp signs Georgia law reviving prosecutor sanctions panel. Democrats fear it's aimed at Fani Willis
Source: AP
ATLANTA (AP) Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed a law Wednesday that lets a state commission begin operating with powers to discipline and remove prosecutors, potentially disrupting Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis prosecution of former President Donald Trump.
This legislation will help us ensure rogue and incompetent prosecutors are held accountable if they refuse to uphold the law, Kemp said before signing the bill, flanked by Republican legislative leaders. As we know all too well, crime has been on the rise across the country, and is especially prevalent in cities where prosecutors are giving criminals a free pass or failing to put them behind bars due to lack of professional conduct.
Though Kemp signed legislation last year creating the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission, it was unable to begin operating after the state Supreme Court in November refused to approve rules governing its conduct. The justices said they had grave doubts about their ability to regulate the duties of district attorneys beyond the practice of law. Tuesdays measure removes the requirement for Supreme Court approval.
The measure is likely to face renewed legal challenges. Four district attorneys dropped their previous lawsuit challenging the commission after the Supreme Court set it aside.

(129,029 posts)was to go after "libbbbbrrrrrruuuuulllll" D.A.s "who refused to prosecute crimes". I.e., they were targeting those who were proponents of "no cash bail" and not going after piddly crap like prosecuting jaywalking or dice cubes hanging from a car's rearview mirror, etc, and even excusing the "joint found in the car" nonsense.
It was pointed out in some of the discussion around the time of initial passage and Kemp 's earlier push-back of it related to Willis, that in her case, she WAS "prosecuting" (i.e., NOT refusing to prosecute), so it didn't seem to fit what the law's intention was.
So it seems they want to twist it into what would essentially be an ex post facto law that targets her for something that wasn't the intent of the law.

(3,339 posts)Though this new perspective they hold that law enforcement is out of control and needs to be curtailed seems to kinda date back only to when Golden Calves was beginning to get into some real trouble. I sure it's just a coinky-dinky for the stinky winkie, though.

(21,871 posts)... Kemp said before signing the bill, flanked by Republican legislative leaders ACCOMPLICES. As we know all too well, crime has been on the rise across the country, and is especially prevalent WHEREVER DONALD TRUMP IS in cities where prosecutors are giving criminals LIKE DONALD TRUMP a free pass or failing to put them behind bars due to lack of professional conduct.

(28,475 posts)of Trump trying to get him to overturn the election, why would he help him now? Oh, hes a Republican and in this climate its either bow down to the orange asshat or kiss reelection goodbye. Thats what he thinks. My guess is, its a no win for him either way. Enough people are fleeing the party that not holding 45 to account might kill his reelection dreams.
