Iran vowed revenge on Israel after blaming it for a deadly air strike on its embassy in Syria a rare direct confrontation in the adversaries escalating proxy conflict over the war in Gaza.
The crime wont remain unanswered, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.
The strike in Damascus late Monday killed at least seven Iranian personnel including senior military commanders and destroyed the consulate building, according to Iranian state media. Israel hasnt confirmed the attack, in keeping with its usual response to accusations of targeting Iran.
Oil rose to its highest level since October on the heightened geopolitical tensions and OPEC+ supply cuts.

(54,506 posts)Its not like a brutal reprisal will come as a surprise to anyone.
Israel has grown increasingly impatient with the daily exchanges of fire with Hezbollah, which have escalated in recent days, and warned of the possibility of a full-fledged war. Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have also been launching long-range missiles toward Israel, including on Monday.
The airstrike in Syria killed Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, who led the elite Quds Force in Lebanon and Syria until 2016, according to Irans Revolutionary Guard. It also killed Zahedis deputy, Gen Mohammad Hadi Hajriahimi, and five other officers.
A member of Hezbollah, Hussein Youssef, also was killed in the attack, an official with the militant group told The Associated Press. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with groups rules. Hezbollah has not publicly announced the death.

eventually leaving us with his 20 year war.
Bibi apparently didn't get the Shrub memo.

(47,762 posts)We've seen this happen too many times. I can't believe there are so many who are oblivious to it. Bush with his daddy issues wanted to outdo his father when it came to Iraq. And I remember Nixon using Vietnam to get reelected and stay in power.
The more Israelis demonstrate against Netanyahu, the more likely he'll bomb something else. "You can't fire me. We're at war.

Yeah, yeah---war is inherently evil. There are still Rules of War, and the Geneva Convention. Starving people is a war crime.
He almost matches trump in narcissism, deceit, and immorality. Stop sending him weapons!

(10,891 posts)The strike targeted a building adjacent to the Iranian embassy in Syria, in the Damascus area municipality of Mezzeh.
Reuters cites Irans SSN news website as saying Israel targeted Irans consulate and ambassadors residence.
Looks like they didn't even scratch the Embassy next door, impressive targeting IMO
