WASHINGTON A virtual meeting on Monday between top U.S. and Israeli officials to discuss Israel's plans for a ground invasion of Rafah in Gaza grew contentious after the Americans pushed back on Israels proposal to evacuate Palestinian civilians sheltering there, said two U.S. officials and one former U.S. official familiar with the meeting.
Ron Dermer, Israels minister of strategic affairs, began yelling and waving his arms around as he defended the plan, the officials said. American officials in the meeting, including national security adviser Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, kept calm and did not respond in kind, the officials said.
Israel presented a plan to move 1.4 million civilians over several weeks from Rafah to tents that would be set up north of the city, the officials said. But the Israeli proposal did not include plans for addressing sanitation needs or an assessment of how much food or water would be required or where it would come from, the officials said. They said the Israeli officials had only thought through sourcing for a fraction of the hundreds of thousands of tents that would be needed.
When U.S. officials said they did not see the idea as realistic, the Israeli officials erupted, the one former and two current U.S. officials said. Two administration officials noted that its long been routine for Dermer to become animated during meetings with U.S. officials and described the meeting as no more contentious than other recent conversations between the two governments. One official said the meeting was productive and designed to kickstart a process for U.S. and Israel to hold a series of discussions about ways Israel might proceed in its war against Hamas, not for the presentation of detailed plans.

right?
Israel tried to get other Arab states to take control but they refused.
Thats the interesting part about the free Palestine chants. Israel tried, but no one would take them, and the Palestinians clearly cant do it on their own.

(33,444 posts)assuming that Israel cannot be dissuaded from attacking the remaining core of Hamas holed up in Rafah, do you have a non-mad plan that mitigates civilian deaths? I sure as fuck don't.
since ceasefire talks appear futile, Hamas seems to be counting on the US dissuading Israel.

(33,444 posts)This is what the job looks like; there are no magic wands and ultimatums just make things worse. Dermer isn't going away and it is evident Sullivan and Blinken are good at their jobs.
If you all get your way and Biden cuts Israel off, then nothing and no one has influence over their strategy and tactics.
Keep remembering that 10/7 really happened, and don't forget that Iran directly funded and helped plan it.

(47,697 posts)Awhile back, I read "The Last Politician" by Franklin Foer about the first two years of the Biden administration. I have to say that I have great respect for both Jake Sullivan and Anthony Blinken. Anyone who has worked for the State Department is underappreciated. It is a complex and often thankless job, sometimes even dangerous.
That said however, the public needs some reassurance that our government does not support or condone the way Netanyahu is waging this war. Americans are inclined to not want to be complicit in the deaths of innocent civilians. Well, sane reasonable Americans anyway.
