Blinken says Israeli proposals to increase flow of aid to Gaza are welcome but may not meet U.S. demands

LEUVEN, Belgium (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday that the measures the Israeli government has announced to expand the flow of aid into Gaza are welcome but may not be enough to meet the Biden administration’s demands for dramatic improvements in humanitarian conditions in the territory.

Blinken said that opening more border crossings, if fully implemented, has the potential to surge assistance to Palestinians caught in the fighting between Israel and Hamas. However, the U.S. also wants to see tangible steps to bolster the protection of civilians and aid workers, he said.

In addition, he called for an “independent, thorough and fully publicized investigation” into the recent killings of aid workers. Seven employees of the charity World Central Kitchen, including six international volunteers, were killed in multiple Israeli airstrikes on their three-car convoy in Gaza late Monday.

The military announced Friday that it dismissed two officers and reprimanded three others for their role in the strikes on the convoy, saying they had mishandled critical information and violated the army’s rules of engagement. The attack on the convoy was a “grave mistake,” the military said. The speed of the investigation and swift punishment of senior officers was highly unusual for the military, where charges against troops for alleged wrongdoing are rare.

You're correct; Blinken can't speak plainly. Doing so would probably make things worse.

allow it to be swept under the rug by Bibi.

A 30 second investigation followed by lame ass excuses and responses...."Oopsie, we messed up. Sorry. We fired the two guys so now let's get on with killing more innocent civilians" is not going to fly anymore. Bibi continues to blow it royally. I guess he doesn't want US help after all. He has become a rogue politician.

explanation of events by the IDF. It doesn't jive. They claim the drone unit couldn't make out any vehicle markings because it was night time. Yet at the same time they say they could see an occupant in one of the vehicles with a "bag" and they thought it might be a gun. Too dark to see the outside but not too dark to see the inside??

They also said that the IDF had failed to relate the aid convoy route to the drone unit. But then they say that they, meaning IDF I presume, tried to call the aid convoy but were unsuccessful. So if IDF knew the route why would they need to call them and what would that have to do with the drone unit not knowing??

I'm not buying the story and I think that an independent investigation should be standard practice in all of these kinds of circumstances involving the military forces of any country.
