Trump mounts new push to recuse judge in hush money case

Former President Trump on Friday demanded his hush money judge recuse himself from the upcoming trial, now less than two weeks away, over his daughter’s firm’s digital marketing work for prominent Democrats. Last summer, Justice Juan Merchan rejected an earlier recusal motion that also cited his daughter’s employment.

Trump’s second attempt comes after Merchan limited Trump’s public statements about the judge’s daughter and others. The judge has also grown perturbed by Trump’s last-minute tactics to stave off the April 15 start date, which is slated to be the former president’s first criminal trial.

Trump’s lawyers argued that Merchan’s daughter, Loren, has a “direct financial interest” in the former president’s case, noting that two clients of her firm, the progressive digital agency Authentic, are President Biden and Vice President Harris.

“Personal political views may not be a basis for recusal. But profiting from the promotion of a political agenda that is hostile to President Trump, and has included fundraising solicitations based on this case, must be,” Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove wrote in a 37-page motion. “Accordingly, President Trump respectfully requests that the Court recuse itself.”

1. That's the way to do it! Trash, insult and threaten a judge's family members

until he has to issue a gag order to protect them, then try to get the judge recused because he's biased against you on account of your threats toward his family. Not unlike at your sentencing following your trial for murdering your parents, where you beg for mercy because you're an orphan.

3. In a normal world, repeatedly filing the same motion would trigger sanctions. But the judiciary is terrified of trump.

Trump's legal team keeps brining up items already decided.

The judge already brought this up last August to the state's Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics.

It appears Trump is desperate for a delay.

6. Judge Merchan's daughter was cleared by ethics board before Trump complained: legal expert

This issue has been already litigated and a states ethics panel ruled on this supposed conflict

Donald Trump filed a motion for Judge Juan Merchan to recuse himself from the trial last year, but it was only after the judge requested a ruling about the matter from an ethics board.

MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin pointed to the timeline of the motion, explaining that on May 4, 2023, the New York State Judicial Ethics Advisory Board reviewed Merchan for possible conflicts and determined there were none.

"We see nothing in the inquiry to suggest that the outcome of the case could have any effect on the judge's relative, the relative's business, or any of their interests," the committee found, an ABC News report quoted.

"There is simply nothing new here that would alter this Court's prior conclusion that nothing about this proceeding will directly benefit Authentic or this Court's family member, let alone this Court," wrote prosecutor Matthew Colangelo when responding to Trump's motion.
