President Joe Biden cut short a weekend trip to his Delaware beach home to return to the White House as Iran launched a series of drone and missile strikes against Israel.
Biden arrived in Washington late afternoon Saturday roughly as Israeli officials announced that the attacks were airborne and would likely take hours to reach Israeli air space. The White House had announced earlier that Biden would be leaving Rehoboth Beach a day earlier than planned in order to consult with his national security team.
This attack is likely to unfold over a number of hours, Adrienne Watson, National Security Council spokesperson, said in a statement. President Biden has been clear: our support for Israels security is ironclad. The United States will stand with the people of Israel and support their defense against these threats from Iran.
The administration has been on high alert for a possible retaliatory attack from Iran or its proxies after an Israeli strike killed a senior Iranian officer at an embassy in Syria. White House officials did not say if something specific prompted Biden to change his travel plans.

U.S. officials have deemed the threat from Iran as real and viable. On Friday, Biden said he believed an attack could happen soon while urging Iran not to go forward with it.
