CHICAGO -- Sen. Tammy Baldwin, facing a tough reelection fight in one of the races that will determine control of Congress, has made protecting reproductive rights a cornerstone of her campaign, and she's willing to back that up by pledging to change the Senate filibuster rules if Democrats retain control of the chamber.
The Wisconsin Democrat said taking that step is necessary to ensure that women in every state - not the government - can decide for themselves whether to have an abortion. As part of her campaign, she warns that Republicans might also target the filibuster to impose a national abortion ban if they prevail in November.
Republicans have shown time and again that they will stop at nothing in their pursuit of controlling womens bodies and I believe them, she said.
Democratic incumbents and challengers running for the Senate this year say they want to restore a national right to abortion, and many, like Baldwin, openly say they would support suspending the filibuster to do so. Its become a key talking point as they try to capitalize on the nationwide battle over abortion rights that has generally helped Democratic candidates since the Supreme Court overturned constitutional protections two years ago.

(622 posts)Yes, it is a good campaign and a successful one.
However, something is missing in this campaign. Latest CBS News Poll says Gallego beating MAGA Lake by 13 points. The same poll has Trump beating Biden by 5 points in Arizona. The same people!
I have to admit Democratic voters are not good compared to Republicans who know what to do to destroy the Republic. have a common message and keep voting for that.
Democrats are supporting Gallego to defeat filibuster and codify Roe vs Wade which is going to be vetoed by Trump? Because these Democratic voters are mad because of Gaza? Have these people been to Gaza? It is nice to be angry from a distance. Gaza issue is a problem created by both Hamas and Netanyahu. Atrocities can be attributed to all sides. Biden is working hard at a peace deal that does not destroy Israel but will also work on a 2-state solution. C'mon, Arizona!

(33,427 posts)They're not to be believed at all. The newspapers won't tell us the truth: that Chump will lose by a landslide because even the Repukes don't want him back in the White House. Well maybe some do want him back, but nowhere near enough to get him elected.
If the polls say Gallego is ahead by 13 points, then Biden is probably close to that also. After Chump's "guilty" verdict - any guilty verdict - he will sink even further. All we Dems need to do is GET THE VOTE OUT, and convince the Independents to vote with us.

(26,998 posts)One - it doesn't accomplish anything but symbolically - because it can't pass the House. And that symbolism is achieved by getting them to filibuster it in the first place.
Two - There's a not-insignificant possibility that we're in the minority in both chambers with a second Trump presidency mere months from now... with the filibuster as the last line of defense.

(131,773 posts)which has a "non-zero" chance of happening given the redistricting that has been happening this year, so they can try to go for it again.
In 2021, when Democrats still controlled the House and took back the Senate after 6 years of being in the minority, there were 2 Voting Rights bills that passed the House but died in the Senate. The media purposely obfuscates Civics 101 and magnifies the nonsense about the President being "at fault" for what happens in Congress and the failure of those bills.
If you don't stand for something, then you stand for nothing.

(437 posts)If the fillibuster is removed then Republicans will eventually undo it all anyways and then some. They could go back and get rid of the Affordable Care act too.

(5,944 posts)... is SUCH a good way to legislate.
Psssst..... they're probably gonna do it anyway when they get the chance. What we do now doesn't make a difference.
If Trump wins, and Senate is GOP, dictatorial Trump will bend the GOP to undo filibuster and create havoc. It is SO IMPORTANT the Presidency remain with a Democrat. Unfortunately, Dem voters in many swing states are more concerned about Gaza when democracy is about to be toppled here. Hope Dems in these states wake up. They seem to be the problem.
