Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced Wednesday the Senate will vote next month on legislation to protect womens access to contraception, setting up a campaign issue for the fall.
Democrats expect Republicans to block the bill, just as they have blocked legislation protecting access to in vitro fertilization, which Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) said included poison pills.
Schumer announced that the Senate has begun the process to consider the Right to Contraception Act, which would codify the right to contraception established by the landmark Supreme Court decision in Griswold v. Connecticut.
Democrats say that right is now at risk because of the conservative majoritys opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Womens Health Organization, which overturned the right to abortion established by Roe v. Wade. Now more than ever, contraception is a critical piece of protecting womens reproductive freedoms, standing as nothing short of a vital lifeline for millions of American women across the country, Schumer said on the Senate floor.

(17,242 posts)Because the issue of Birth Control is a winner even with Republican women to avoid having to choose motherhood if they are not ready.
Draconian laws regarding Contraception access is a loser issue for Republicans.

We have to eliminate the fillibuster.

(131,746 posts)is proof enough. That's basically all the "modern" cloture Rule is - a lazy way to filibuster without bothering to debate the merits of the business at hand.
