World Court orders Israel to halt assault on Gaza's Rafah

THE HAGUE, May 24 (Reuters) - Judges at the top United Nations court ordered Israel on Friday to immediately halt its military assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah, in a landmark emergency ruling in South Africa's case accusing Israel of genocide.

While the International Court of Justice, or World Court, has no means to enforce its orders, the case was a stark sign of Israel's global isolation over its campaign in Gaza, particularly since it began its offensive against Rafah this month against the pleas of its closest ally the United States.

Reading out the ruling, World Court president Nawaf Salam said the situation in the Palestinian enclave had deteriorated since the court last ordered Israel to take steps to improve it, and conditions had been met for a new emergency order. "The state of Israel shall (....) immediately halt its military offensive, and any other action in the Rafah governorate, which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part," he said.

Israel had not explained how it would keep the population safe during an evacuation of Rafah, or provide food, water, sanitation and medicine for the 800,000 Palestinians that had already fled the Israeli advance, he said. The ICJ ordered Israel to open the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza to let in aid. Israel, it added, must provide access for investigators and report back on its progress within one month.

The order was adopted by the panel of 15 judges from around the world in a 13-2 vote, opposed only by judges from Uganda and from Israel itself.

THE HAGUE, May 24 (Reuters) - Judges at the top United Nations court ordered Israel on Friday to halt its military assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

Reading out a ruling by the International Court of Justice or World Court, the body's president Nawaf Salam said provisional measures ordered by the court in March did not fully address the situation in the besieged Palestinian enclave now, and conditions had been met for a new emergency order.

"Israel must immediately halt its military offensive" in Rafah, he said. The court backed a South African request to order Israel to halt its offensive in Rafah, a week after Pretoria called for the measure in a case accusing Israel of genocide. Outside, a small group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators waved flags and played a rap on a boom box calling for a free Palestine.

Israel has repeatedly dismissed the case's accusations of genocide as baseless, arguing in court that its operations in Gaza are self-defence and targeted at Hamas militants who attacked Israel on Oct. 7. An Israeli government spokesman said on the eve of Friday's decision that "no power on Earth will stop Israel from protecting its citizens and going after Hamas in Gaza".

The ICJ is the highest U.N. body for hearing disputes between states. Its rulings are final and binding but have been ignored in the past. The court has no enforcement powers.

There was already one attempt to get the ICJ to block German arms exports to Israel; if Israel ignores this ruling, there will be pressure to revisit that, or on governments to do it voluntarily, since this is a United Nations court.

IDF finds rockets in Rafah graveyard as troops push deeper into south Gaza city

Israeli troops located missiles and rocket launchers belonging to the Hamas terror group in a Rafah graveyard, the military said Thursday, as soldiers deepened their assault in the Strip’s southernmost city.

Soldiers have killed several Palestinian gunmen in close-quarters combat and airstrikes across Gaza took out a number of terror group operatives, including one who was among the approximately 3,000 to storm into southern Israel on October 7, the Israel Defense Forces also said in a statement.

Troops of the Givati Brigade operating in the eastern part of the city found the projectiles at the grave site, as well as a number of “significant underground” sites used by terror operatives. The statement did not provide further details on the tunnels.

In the same area this week, the IDF said the Givati troops killed several gunmen who emerged from a tunnel shaft and opened fire. A short while later, another four operatives came out of a nearby building and the soldiers directed a drone strike against them and the structure, the army said.

Oh, wait, I see. Israel is to leave Hamas alone.
"The state of Israel shall (....) immediately halt its military offensive, and any other action in the Rafah governorate, which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part," he said.

Also, from what has been reported it is Egypt who is refusing to allow aid to pass the Rafah crossing...

7. Did the World Court order Hamas to evaucate Rafah and return the hostages?

If the World Court can't imprison Hamas terrorists for their crimes, can't get the hostages back, and can't protect Israel, then they don't have much say in what goes on in Gaza.
