Morgan Spurlock, 'Super Size Me' Director, Dies at 53

Source: Variety

Morgan Spurlock, a documentary filmmaker who captured his own psychological and physical symptoms from eating McDonald’s every day for a month in the Oscar-nominated 2004 feature “Super Size Me,” died Thursday in upstate New York due to complications of cancer. He was 53.

Spurlock’s family confirmed his death.

“It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan,” says Craig Spurlock, who worked with his brother on several projects. “Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas and generosity. Today the world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.”

Spurlock rose to prominence for “Super Size Me,” in which he conducted an experiment involving consuming only food from McDonald’s for a 30-day stretch. The rules also included the stipulation that Spurlock could not refuse the “super-size” option if prompted during the transaction. The filmmaker also exercised less to match the average American’s physical activity. By the end of the experiment, Spurlock claimed that he gained 25 pounds and suffered from depression and liver dysfunction.

He tracked a yellow bag of trash from the street curb in NYC to wherever it ended up.

The article says he died from "complications of cancer," which can happen at almost any age. Which doesn’t make it any less sad, of course.

I guess I've gotten used to more and more people surviving cancer these days that I am often shocked when people die young.

I wonder if all those diets he did had anything to do with it? I enjoyed his work.

My father was 52 when he died and likely it was caused by his job. He was a printer and back then it was pretty much all hand work. I worked with him for a while but after 30 years I bet the chemicals had something to do with it. Pancreatic cancer.

This is sad news.

So sorry.

I went to art college. In '71 we had a great semester with a fairly higher end printer's owner at his shop in a more south west Manhattan area full of printing companies.

It was so informative, and a fun class. We even got to have a 2 color piece printed up! Good times.

I started eating healthier and limited fast food to less than once a month. I stopped gaining weight and at 70 I now weigh what I weighed at 35. Still got a few pounds to go but I feel great and credit that movie for my success. Thanks, Morgan, and RIP.

In addition to Supersize Me, he also did a documentary on migrant farm workers where he worked along side them picking citrus fruits and then slept overnight with them in their cramped trailers. He could not keep up and the foreman kept rejecting his loads because he was picking ones that weren’t ripe enough. The migrant workers picked the right fruit incredibly fast and were very agile on ladders. They were paid a pittance for each carboy they picked. It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen it so please forgive me for not remembering the name of it or other details.

I think he also did a documentary on working in the coal mines, but my memory won’t bring any details back from the recesses of my mind. He did a lot of good work to expose the harsh working conditions of jobs we take for granted.

I've said it many times, if the money spent in the world on senseless wars was instead spent on cancer research, we would have had a cure long ago.
