KEY POINTS
* Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas accepted millions of dollars' worth of gifts over two decades on the bench, according to a new data analysis.
* The figure sets Thomas far apart from his current colleagues, according to the nonprofit Fix the Court.
* The analysis provides fodder for Supreme Court critics who have called for reforms in the wake of a series of politically incendiary rulings and ongoing ethics scandals.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas accepted millions of dollars' worth of gifts over the past two decades on the bench, a total nearly 10 times the value of all gifts received by his fellow justices during the same time, according to a new analysis.
Thomas received 103 gifts with a total value of more than $2.4 million between 2004 and 2023, the judicial reform group Fix the Court said in a report Thursday.(1)
In contrast, Thomas' fellow justices over the same period accepted a total of just 93 gifts worth a combined value of only about $248,000, according to the nonprofit group.
Thomas' fellow conservative justice Samuel Alito accounted for the lion's share of that value. Fix the Court's analysis found that Alito accepted 16 gifts worth a combined $170,095.

(11,202 posts)Didn't Thomas always complain about the crappy pay? That he would be rolling in money if not for taking the job of serving his country on the highest Court in the land. He should have resigned and cashed in over a decade ago. Conflicted POS.

(11,202 posts)An attorney such as Thomas in DC would command a much bigger salary, probably would be a partner in a firm, or high priced corporate legal advisor.
Thomas knew this going in. He could have, and still can, resign at any time and ethically go for the big money. Instead Thomas decided to supplement his income with gifts/bribes (in Thomas's mind, he deserved that extra financial help to offset the losses from many years being paid too little).
I am not saying that I agree with what Thomas has done to enrich himself. He should be forced to resign for his behavior.
Ms. Toad
(38,282 posts)I'm pretty sure none of them make anywhere near that much. (My brother is the only possibility of the three, and I'm pretty sure his and his wife's combined income was no more than 60% of that amount.)
What Thomas could command elsewhere is completely irrelevant. He chose to take this job knowing what the salary was.

(5,500 posts)Its time we take a little bit to the supreme out of that court. Maybe a direct vote of confidence on each Justice or the court itself - by American citizens every four years. If the court is found lacking, it should be disbanded and a new court should replace it. Something Anything is better than the absurdly biased pack of jackals we have wearing those black robes now.

Thomas should never have gotten out of his hearings after the facts of
his multiple sexual harassment cases came out. After the Anita Hill
story came out 3 different women came forward with stories about how
he had done the same things to them.

Justice Clarence Thomas is far and away the largest recipient of gifts in the recorded history of the U.S. Supreme Court, a bombshell new report by a nonpartisan judicial reform advocacy group reveals.
Since 1981, 17 people have served as members of the nations high court. During that period, 672 documented and likely gifts have been given to the justices, according to Fix the Court.
Out of that total, Thomas has allegedly received 319 such gifts just shy of half of all gifts documented by the group.

(6,115 posts)The screech monkeys in the House have show scam hearing after show scam hearing for shit that happened years ago (like Fauci's handling of the COVID pandemic) and you sit on your hands and are satisfied with Alito giving you the finger.
Haul Alito and Thomas into a hearing to address their corruption, and if they ignore your subpoena (which they will do), then prosecute them. You have that authority. USE IT.
Democratic voters want to see a goddamn spine. If you don't have one, step aside.

(5,041 posts)would block on impeachment and Thomas has no ethics and won't resign. I know it won't happen but there should be a constitutional ammendment changing how SC judges are appointed. There should be a list of qualified candidates given to the President at the start of each term, by legal scholars and the American Bar Association. His/her pick has to be from the list, and there would be no involvement of the Congress. Decisions on whether the Justices have violated their oaths and should be removed also should be made by the Bar, not politicians.
