Hamas-run health ministry says 71 killed in Israeli strike in Gaza

Source: BBC

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says at least 71 Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli air strike on a designated humanitarian area, in an attack which Israel says targeted senior Hamas leaders.

More than 289 people were injured, according to the health ministry's statement.

The strike reportedly hit the al-Mawasi area near Khan Younis, which the Israeli military has designated as a humanitarian zone, urging Palestinians to seek shelter there.

An Israeli official said the strike targeted the head of Hamas's military wing, Mohammed Deif, in an "open area" where there were "only Hamas terrorists and no civilians".

Deif, 58, who has been on Israel’s most-wanted list since 1995 and escaped multiple Israeli assassination attempts, is believed to be the chief architect of the attack that killed 1,200 people in southern Israel and triggered the Israel-Hamas war.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Rafa Salama, another top Hamas official, was also targeted in the strike. The IDF did not have details on whether the two were killed.

Most of the injured were sent to Nasser hospital. However, according to officials and medics, the facility is “no longer able to function” as doctors are “overwhelmed with large numbers of casualties”.

But you have to go back to how they came to power, and for that, you can blame George W Bush. Here's a good article explaining what happened in 2006.
