Justice Neil Gorsuch: Americans are 'getting whacked' by too many laws

Source: The Guardian

US supreme court justice Neil Gorsuch has said ordinary Americans are “getting whacked” by too many laws and regulations in a new book that underscores his skepticism of federal agencies and the power they wield.

“Too little law and we’re not safe, and our liberties aren’t protected,” Gorsuch told the Associated Press in an interview in his supreme court office. “But too much law and you actually impair those same things.”

Over Ruled: The Human Toll of Too Much Law is being published Tuesday by Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. Gorsuch has received a $500,000 advance for the book, according to his annual financial disclosure reports.

In the interview, Gorsuch refused to be drawn into discussions about term limits or an enforceable code of ethics for the justices, both recently proposed by Joe Biden at a time of diminished public trust in the court.

But Gorsuch did talk about the importance of judicial independence. “I’m not saying that there aren’t ways to improve what we have. I’m simply saying that we’ve been given something very special. It’s the envy of the world, the United States judiciary,” he said.

I think he was using the royal "We" and talking about his RW partners on the Court.

papers a day, and that's it. As to the law and all that's going on...I say that the legislators and elected officials on the front lines, as well as the attorneys working the front lines too, know far more than you POS.

And by the way, with the way you all whacked Roe, said that it was, after being the law of the land for so long, invalid, you caused each and every territory in the US to have to examine the laws on their books, perhaps write and enact more laws, from 1 thing you did.

Happy? Scumbag. Can't admit any responsibility for the mess you all made.

Gorsuch based her administration of the EPA on the New Federalism approach of downsizing federal agencies by delegating their functions and services to the individual states. She believed that the EPA was over-regulating business and that the agency was too large and not cost-effective. During her 22 months as agency head, she cut the budget of the EPA by 22%, reduced the number of cases filed against polluters, relaxed Clean Air Act regulations, and facilitated the spraying of restricted-use pesticides. She cut the total number of agency employees, and hired staff from the industries they were supposed to be regulating. Environmentalists contended that her policies were designed to placate polluters, and accused her of trying to dismantle the agency. It was reported in 1982 that the EPA was disregarding management of toxic landfills, citing costs.

From the same Wikipedia article
Superfund
In 1982, Congress charged that the EPA had mishandled the $1.6 billion toxic waste Superfund by taking certain inappropriate and potentially illegal actions including withholding disbursements in order to affect a California political campaign. When Congress demanded records from Gorsuch, she refused and as a result became the first agency director in U.S. history to be cited for contempt of Congress.[8][9]

Hugh Kaufman, an EPA employee, leaked documents to Congress.[10][11]

The stand-off ended in late February 1983, when Richard Hauser, the White House deputy counsel, confirmed one or more Reagan Administration officials had in fact reported to the White House that they had heard Gorsuch say at an August 4, 1982, luncheon that she was holding back more than $6 million in Federal funds to clean up the Stringfellow Acid Pits toxic waste site near Los Angeles to avoid helping the Senate campaign of former Gov. Jerry Brown of California, a Democrat.[12]

The White House then abandoned its court claim that the documents related to this incident could not be subpoenaed by Congress because they were covered by executive privilege and the EPA turned the documents over to Congress. Gorsuch immediately resigned her post effective March 3, 1983, citing pressures caused by the media and the congressional investigation.

Why would a judge complain about "too many laws?" Their job is to rule on the applicability of law to a particular case, or the constitutionality of a law. Their job does not include judgment on the number of laws. Gorsuch is a prefect example of why we need to remind SCOTUS of what their job is, what their job is not, and what constituter a breach of ethics.

He is another weird one. Still carrying a grudge that Congress tried to make his mother as EPA director actually follow the law that President Nixon proposed. Oh! The horror! And that also goes for your Republican friends and associates who never want to be held to any rules, never saw a rule they didn't want to break, never saw a guardrail they didn't want to weasel around, never saw a goal they weren't at least tempted to try to cheat to win.

"Justice Clarence Thomas failed to publicly disclose additional private travel provided by the wealthy conservative donor Harlan Crow, a top Democratic senator said in a letter on Monday.

Customs and Border Protection records revealed that the justice and his wife, Virginia Thomas, took a round trip between Hawaii and New Zealand in November 2010 on Mr. Crow’s private jet, according to the letter.
