Nine States Sue Joe Biden Admin Over Expanding Voter Registration

Source: Newsweek

Published Aug 14, 2024 at 8:41 AM EDT | Updated Aug 14, 2024 at 9:59 AM EDT

Nine states have launched a lawsuit against the Biden administration's voter registration order, complaining it was drafted by a "progressive activist group," and allows imprisoned felons to illegally register to vote.

Biden's Executive Order 14019 is designed to increase voter registration among poorer Black adults and other marginalized groups.

But the lawsuit states: "Agencies implementing that order seem to be doing so without following any of the procedures laid out by Congress. For example, the U.S. Attorney General is registering imprisoned felons to vote—but there was never notice nor comment on that policy to allow the public to weigh in on whether that is right. And in many States, felons voting is illegal."

It cites a letter "from Richard J. Durbin, U.S. Senator, et al., to Merrick Garland, U.S. Attorney General and Ms. Collette Peters, Director, U.S. Bureau of Prisons (Mar. 28, 2024) (noting that under EO 14019 'hundreds of individuals inside federal prisons have successfully registered and voted in recent elections.'"

Keep them away from the ballot, but hand them the nuclear codes?

Makes perfect Republican "sense."

It immunized him from criminal prosecution. But he doesn't face criminal prosecution for issuing an executive order. If that order is held to be unconstitutional or otherwise contrary to law, it can and will be enjoined by the courts.

I've noticed that a lot of folks have a very mistaken notion of what the immunity decision did, and did not, do.

I don't think that voters who support a candidate who refuses to commit to accepting the results of their election should be allowed to vote. But that is just my opinion and isn't in the Constitution so I wouldn't be writing half-cocked letters to the Attorney General about it.

I wonder if Canada would take North Dakota? Or given it's tiny population, maybe it could be reunited with South Dakota and just be Dakota -- and lose 2 senate seats in the process

Republicans have never understood the concept of democracy or the one-man-one-vote principle of our forebears. The autocratic right has always disapproved of voting by those not proven " worthy". So they have no problem blocking ballot access to anyone or any group who might not support their purposes.
It's a shameless charade, this "concern" about felons voting. They absolutely care nothing about voting so long as they control the vote counting process. The reporting media is falling in line with their masters by pretending that felon voting is an important demographic.I defy them to find any other aspect of criticism for Biden's initiative which isn't just pure Jim Crow bullshit.
Unfortunately this will rest in the minds of the naive as "rapists and murderers standing in the voter line with grandma". Give me a break. The media is simply falling in line with the underworld of conservatism to promote ignorance again.

So tired of this stuff, off with their heads! All of them!
