French President Emmanuel Macron praised on Friday (local time) the more than 1000 craftspeople who helped rebuild Paris' Notre-Dame Cathedral in what he called "the project of the century", five-and-a-half-years after fire gutted the Gothic masterpiece.

The 12th-century cathedral, one of the French capital's most beloved and visited monuments, will reopen its doors next week to tourists and to the Catholic faithful.

An opening ceremony - to which celebrities and heads of state have been invited - is planned for the evening of 7 December, followed by days of special Masses to celebrate the reopening and to thank those who helped save and rebuild the cathedral.

So much money poured in for the renovation from all over the world - more than €840 million euros (NZ$1.5b), according to Macron's office - that there are still funds left over for further investment in the building.

What I found of "breaking" calibre here was the opening date announcement and the bit about left-over funds, but the photos in the article are quite stunning. I may be an atheist, but I was overwhelmed by the place when I visited it last century, pushing to the extreme the capabilities of gothic architectural technology as it does. It actually seems to have been improved upon.

I thought the Notre Dame Cathedral in Montreal was beautiful.
But it is does not come close to the one in Paris.

3. I adore spending time in Notre Dame (or at least I did on 1 day stopovers in Paris)...

One need not be religious to experience an experiential sense of peace and to revel in the grandeur.

4. It looked so clean and white inside. I guess a good cleaning every 800

years is a good idea. When I was a tourist in Paris the second time we walked by ND as a few people were entering. So we peaked in and someone was singing Ava Maria from a balcony. What a moment. Ot was a dark grey inside. So glad they came in fast and underbudget so new generations can enjoy it. The craftmen/women were from all over the world including Quebec.

6. Watching TV in 2019 and...

seeing the flames rise up from this beautiful cathedral, I thought about a book I have - "Pillars of the Earth" - written by Ken Follett.
As with all his books, he did the prior research and his descriptions of the times, places, events, people and politics make for a tremendous read.
If you are interested in learning about what it took to build a cathedral in that century, I recommend this book.
