Court blocks Kroger's $25 billion acquisition of grocery rival Albertsons

A U.S. judge blocked the pending $25 billion merger of U.S. grocery chains Kroger and Albertsons on Tuesday, siding with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission in a win for the Biden administration.
The FTC argued at a three-week trial in Portland, Oregon, that the merger would eliminate head-to-head competition between the top two traditional grocery chains, leading to higher prices for shoppers and reduced bargaining leverage for unionized workers.
Kroger fought those claims, saying the deal would bring prices down, particularly at Albertsons stores, where it said prices are 10-12% higher than at Kroger stores. The merged company would fund price cuts through cost savings it expects from a larger operation, and a larger customer base to drive revenue for Krogers data consulting business, Kroger said.
Nelsons ruling essentially scuttles the merger, Kroger has said in court documents. Had the deal proceeded, Kroger would own approximately 5,000 stores across the U.S. The companies argued at trial that they needed to merge to compete with global conglomerates such as Walmart and Amazon.com.

(22 posts)I agree. Those are the two competing grocery stores in my market (after they threw Raley's out of my market). For obvious reasons (a total monopoly on the part of Kroger), I was dead set against this merger.

(4,328 posts)I dont expect well see an uptick in anti-monopoly rulings anytime soon but this is a refreshing change from the usual rubber stamp judiciary.

(842 posts)Every month I go there they are raising the prices 10-30 cents per item and every time I go shopping they have a small sign next to the item saying the price is locked in. Now I could go on a long trip to Walmart 30 miles away round trip but gasoline in my area is ~$5-6 so I would probably only save a few cents.
I support this decision by the judge.

Safeway used to be pretty good, but their meat is awful. I used to return things a lot. Then quit shopping there.

(3,164 posts)I was in an Albertson's here in Vegas about 2 hours ago. According to the lady who checked me out, they've been aquired by Piggly-Wiggly. Don't know if it has any validity...could just be company gossip, because it would have had to be a "trigger" type deal...if "A" doesn't happen, then "B"will.

(20,950 posts)It would have decimated our community as they would own almost all of the grocery stores except for ones they would sell off to someone else. That has usually ended up with small stores changing hands and going broke. They would drive out any and all competition.

(2,675 posts)and they've let the infrastructure just run down. The only reason QFC still has good selection, produce and a good sushi chef (sushi is like its own food group here) is because there is competition here from local groceries. They can't afford to.
