Virginia councilman set on fire in personal attack at his office: Police

The suspect, Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, allegedly confronted Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler, 38, at his office, at Showcase Magazine, and covered him with a flammable liquid, the Danville Police Department said. Both went outside where Hayes allegedly set Vogler on fire, police said.

Hayes, 29, of Danville, is in custody, police said. The suspect allegedly fled the scene and was then stopped by officers a few blocks away, police said.

Vogler has been taken to a hospital in unknown condition, police said. Showcase Magazine said he sustained “serious burn injuries.”

It appears Vogler and Hayes know each other "and the attack stems from a personal matter not related to the victim’s position on Danville City Council or any other political affiliation," police said.

Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler was attacked and set on fire outside the Professional Building on Main Street downtown on Wednesday.

Andrew Brooks, publisher and owner at Showcase Magazine, confirmed the incident in a social media video.


Vogler

A man forced his way into the office with a five-gallon container of gasoline, poured the gas on Vogler and chased him out of the building and set him on fire, Brooks said in the video.

"Lee is awake and talking and en route to the burn center in Lynchburg," Brooks said. "Our hearts and prayers are with him."

"This type of senseless act of violence has to stop," Brooks said. "You do not have the right as a human being to get upset at someone enough to lash out and attempt to harm them in any way, much less this way."

10. He was running out, trying to get away from the him. They didn't just walk out together.

"Our door is locked," Brooks told The Associated Press. "They forced their way into the office, and went to Lee. The next thing, Lee is running through the office covered in gasoline, yelling for our officemate to call 911. The guy chased him outside and set him on fire.

It almost sounds like a friendly, reasonable encounter. Aside from the gasoline and setting Vogler on fire.

I will say that fire is the only thing I have ever been terrified of. I've never been in a fire, but I'm still terrified. Who knows, maybe I burned to death in a fire in an earlier life.
