Fearful of ban, frenzied buyers swarm gun stores
Source: Associated Press
Assault rifles are sold out across the country. Rounds of .223 bullets, like those used in the AR-15 type Bushmaster rifle used in Newtown, are scarce. Stores are struggling to restock their shelves. Gun and ammunition makers are telling retailers they will have to wait months to get more.
Store owners who have been in the business for years say they have never seen demand like this before.
When asked how much sales have increased in the past few weeks, Horsley just laughed.
"We haven't even had a chance to look at it," he says. Horsley spends his days calling manufacturers around the country trying to buy more items for the store. Mainly, they tell him he has to wait.

(19,243 posts)That's something even many Democrats wouldn't support, and could also be ruled illegal by the Supreme Court. Besides which, who's going to go door-to-door collecting all those illegal weapons? I imagine there wouldn't be many volunteers for that task.

(690 posts)Every day I trust the Police less. I will never own an AR15, I don't like them. When I was in Washington DC one night 13 Police cars were broke into (in a maintenance yard) they stole the rifles and vests, that's reason enough for people to own them.

(33,345 posts)you don't trust the cops because they got robbed in DC, so you want to have an equivalent arsenal? do you plan to have a firefight with a SWAT team in the near future? how do you think that will work out for you, given the history of every other fool who decided to go out with their hand on the trigger of a gun?

(617 posts)But I wonder what underwriters would set the prices at - and at what risk? Its possible though, and a VERY good idea.

(5,436 posts)I looked up some info, did a rough calculation, and to cover the liability for gun deaths it would cost roughly $1,000 per year per gun.

(617 posts)Sounds good to me. Now THIS is a viable solution. Its going to end up in the USSC because the founding fathers didn't know what an automobile was (or else I'll wager they would have had an amendment saying "the right to drive cars shall not be infringed blah blah."
I want this to happen though. This could work very well.
I did the research, and came up with a number. $1,000 per gun per year for all you Delicate Flowers too scared to exist without a weapon.
If you're a scared coward unable to function without a gun, I would hope you consider that cheap.

You gun religionists are hilarious. Do you parrots have ANYTHING to waste Liberal's time with besides NRA Talking Points?
The insurance that everyone is talking about would pay for deaths that your slaughter-Preciouses deal out to Americans.

There are so many legal gun owners and so few deaths due to them.

I am so frustrated with our slowly-evolving/quickly devolving species. We have to go through so much hardship before we EVEN consider changing our ways. Good thing we're on a planet that is tucked away in an obscure location of the Milky Way Galaxy!

(906 posts)isn't chambered for 9mm. A SigSauer P220 Carry is only chambered in .45 ACP which is moving at a sub-sonic 850 fps, and that the pistols magazine has only an 8-round capacity.

(1,231 posts)This is why nothing short of a total ban will have a major impact on deaths by firearm. All posession must be illegal.
But while it is legal, enjoy your boomsticks, I say. But please don't leave them in store bathrooms or shoot up a public place with them.
