Venezuela deports Frenchman jailed in Chavez plot

CARACAS: Venezuela on Saturday expelled a French national after he served four years in prison for an alleged plot to kill President Hugo Chavez, authorities said.

"French intelligence agent who served time for trying to kill the president has been expelled after confession his role," Prison System Minister Iris Varela said in a message on Twitter.

"Frederic Laurent Bouquet, arrested 18-06-2009 and sentenced to four years, confessed that he came to carry out a hit on (President Hugo) Chavez. He was detained with an arsenal in his possession," she said in another tweet.

The Frenchman, whose name is spelled Bocquet, was arrested in August 2009 in Caracas; authorities confiscated 13 rifles, two machine guns, explosives and ammunition, and military uniforms. He was sentenced for weapons possession and concealing arms.

The French embassy in Caracas did not immediately comment on the development.

These articles are singularly uninformative.

But, then, I've come to expect as much from the corpo-fascist press.

I don't remember reading of this particular plot against Chavez, back when they were caught (2009). Do you? Was there anything at that time about motive? WHY were a Frenchman and Dominicans targeting Chavez? How was their travel, etc., and their arsenal paid for? Who were they working for? And if they thought this up all on their own, and went to all this trouble and risk...WHY?

A quick Google search was useless.

But I found a brief blog entry:

ETA - looks like that's it. Even Spanish and French Google don't yield anything. Nor Archive.org - I search for the defunct link in the article, then for the site's archives for May. Nothing.

Bouquet was arrested in 2009 with three men from the Dominican Republic, CNN continued.

PressTV reported that he had 13 rifles, two machine guns, explosives, ammunition and military uniforms with him at the time of his arrest.

Varela did not say where exactly Bouquet was being sent, according to the Associated Press. The minister said he was being deported under a law that allows the government to remove anyone who threatens Venezuela's security.

At the time of Bouquet's arrest, then-Interior Minister Tarek El Aissami said Bouquet had military experience and had spent time in Israel, noted CNN. He also said Bouquet was thought to be a French intelligence agent.
