Abortion clinics could close under new law, both sides agree

For all their immense, intense and emotional-filled differences, abortion rights advocates and opponents agree on this: Abortion clinics may close because of a new Michigan law that requires they get a license. But that's where the agreement ends.
Depending on which side you stand on, clinic doors might swing shut either because they can't afford to meet onerous licensing standards or because they endanger women's health.
"What we'll see is that clinics will be brought into compliance or they will close," said Ed Rivet, longtime legislative liaison for Right to Life of Michigan, which issued a report last year of alleged unsanitary and unsafe conditions over several years at Michigan's 32 abortion clinics.
The new law, effective March 31, requires that a provider that "performs 120 or more surgical abortions per year and publicly advertises outpatient abortion services" be licensed as a freestanding outpatient surgical facility.

The formerly great state of Michigan is about to rename itself as ... MICHISSIPPI.
Rick Snyder is every bit the same kind of snake as Scott Walker, but wearing better camouflage.
like these damn rethugs just don't care who and HOW MANY they are hurting. God I hate this state. And we have two more years of this type of 50's reactionary white male/religious right mentality war on people of color and women. Well Michiganians bought the lies and there is a no return policy on their votes. Voting against your own self interest. I just don't get it.

(14,350 posts)The only reason we swung blue in the presidential election is higher population numbers in a handful of counties. The vast majority of this state is very conservative, right wing, and evangelical/fundamentalist Christian, and it shows in Lansing.
I'm disgusted by our so-called leaders in Lansing. They're just a bunch of thugs.

(16,079 posts)You're saying that the Xtian Taliban rules the state of Michigan! But the reality is, they are more buffet Xtians, then anything else...they choose what parts of the bible they'll follow, make shit up to justify their bigotry and misogyny, and ignore the parts they don't agree with!

(14,350 posts)I live in Battle Creek. We actually voted in a US Rep who's one of the worst/most conservative ones in Congress. This in a supposedly more blue area. If we can elect a jerk like that, it pretty much explains the rest of the state.

(6,119 posts)if he had run again, in spite of how the district was re-cut in 2010. Hopefully in 2014 we'll have someone serious to go up against Walberg that can ride in on Governor Whitmer's coattails.
I'd run myself, but I lack the experience, charisma, funding, time, and most importantly, the money.

(14,350 posts)Last time, he had wretched staff. Just awful. If he fixed that problem and ran a solid campaign, we'd get rid of Asma or whatever his right-wing ass is called.
