Duckworth says DHS fled Navy base near Chicago during visit from Democrats

Source: msn/The Hill

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) on Sunday said the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) fled a Navy base near Chicago during a visit from Democrats. Trump border czar Tom Homan confirmed late last month that the Trump administration was discussing using Naval Station Great Lakes, which is near Chicago, to back up immigration detention efforts.

Duckworth said she, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Ill.) had asked DHS about what they were doing at the Naval Station Great Lakes. Initially, DHS told the lawmakers they could not visit the base, Duckworth said.

“Senator Durbin, myself, Senator — Congressman Schneider sent a request into DHS to ask them to explain what exactly are you going to be doing at Great Lakes, and can we come look at your facility so we have a better understanding of what your operations are, and they replied, no, you can’t, and, in fact, gave their staff the day off on the day that we went to go look at the facilities and locked the doors and left the base,” Duckworth told CBS’s Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation,” referencing Naval Station Great Lakes.

“Basically, they fled the base,” she added.

... retired. I went off to New London and Sub School Nov 73.

Fannon was one of the coolest dudes I met in boot camp and he also came from Akron. Once we were walking up to school and there was a JG on a bike with a brief case in in left hand. "Watch this." he said. He stepped from the sidewalk onto the curb and snapped of the prettiest salute you ever saw. The JG took his right hand off the handle bars to salute back and crashed in the street. The BT school was next to the MM, Engineman the other side of MM.

What we would do to keep from saluting. Pop covers and brush our hair back, get out of range at the last second, there were times when LG and Lts would walk right at us trying to vector us into salute range and if we had four of us we'd march to their oblique. If not we'd make a more acute angle of course. Or drop and tie our shoes.

Gawd I loved the Zumwalt Navy.

When my four years were up, I had to take my discharge papers up the Chain of Command to be signed by each officer. Each officer is supposed to give a re-enlistment speech -- NOBODY gave me a speech, just signed my papers. Apparently, four years was enough for me AND for the Navy!
I'm happy to be a Veteran -- much like someone who was in prison is happy to be an EX- con!

Ran into a guy from boot camp in Akron a few years later, but I am no degenerate drinker and he was world class. I do miss Bill Fannon and I have no evidence he came back to Akron, Tony DeLuca became a White House Honor Guard and I lost track of him when he went to DC.

I was there for boot in '65 and IC "A" school in '66, and BOTH times the scrambled eggs were like runny snot when it was ladled onto the tray. There were so many boots, and future submarine "Non-Qualified Pukes" (NQP) to feed, they didn't have time to cook the snot until it firmed up, we just sort of ate and drank the scrambled as is. And don't even ask how runny the over easy fried eggs were.

You know damn well the food was never good until you got on the submarines with us. The New York Sirloins with fried onions and mushrooms at any time of day you wanted it. Just had to clean up your own mess which was no problem.

And the steak smell from the grill helped knock down the diesel fuel mist in the aft battery mess.

... no one believes me when I tell them you got to eat what you pretty much wanted, steaks, lobster tails, subs was good duty. Better bunks, no hot bunking, good lighting, paneling on the bulkheads, acoustic on the overhead, tile on the deck. If you needed a bigger view, the missile room was as big or bigger than a basket ball court, with a 20ft overhead. They just don't believe it. AND we get sleep very close to nuclear reactors and whatever missiles are in the tube. Loved it until I didn't so much. Just don't know how or why I did it, but I don't want to do it again.

In a lot of ways it was like living in our parents' rec room, except for the valve turning and gauge logging. Great place to get up a game of spades. People got along a lot better than in the surface fleet. People took their jobs very seriously.

GRAPE LAKES NAVAL TRAINING CENTER is what we called it in the ‘60s.

It is/was boot camp for new recruits, and “A” School to be an electrician or machinist mate. There are/were many WWII era barracks like for housing recruits/anti-Trump prisoners.

They are locked out and given little, if any, information about what the military or any other branch is doing.

This is a defacto war against Democrats.

I suggest that the Democratic party start treating this as the war that it is.
