US firms monitor employees' social media after Charlie Kirk killing

Bosses in America are increasingly policing employees’ social media posts to see if they could cause reputational damage to their businesses, the head of country’s biggest human resources association has said.

Johnny C Taylor Jr, president and chief executive of the Society for Human Resource Management, told The Times he attended a meeting with dozens of Fortune 200 companies last week where chief HR officers said their companies were “actively and increasingly monitoring employees’ activity”, including by using generative AI tools.

Employees’ online activity, even when they don’t mention the name of their employer, has become a focus point for boardrooms in the aftermath of the killing of the conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Workers have been suspended or fired for social media posts about Kirk’s death at companies including Nasdaq, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and The Carolina Panthers, a professional American football team.

Just who do these companies think are their customers? Seems to me they are damaging their reputations by fawning over magat snowflakes. Normal decent Americans, the actual majority are not wringing their hands over Kirk posts.

This guy (maga) did not like my fb post and called me every disgusting thing you could think of. I asked him if his employer knew how vulgar he was? Clearly he hates women. It wasn't hard to figure out who he was employed by. I emailed them and never heard from the man again.

Every six months, we have to sign an attestation that we understand and agree to the ethics and social media rules. And that includes not fighting over political issues, even if you do not have anything that connects the bank to who you are online.

And yes, they have fired people before. Obviously the really easy way around that is to be totally fucking anonymous and not have anything that links who you actually are to your social media profile but I guess people haven’t figured that out yet.
