Disney+ hikes streaming prices despite lingering fallout over Kimmel suspension

Source: Yahoo Finance

Disney (DIS) is raising prices on its streaming platforms once again — about one year after its last increase and just days after a tumultuous week surrounding its decision to suspend and reinstate late-night host Jimmy Kimmel on ABC. . .

Starting Oct. 21, the ad-supported tier of Disney+ will rise by $2 to $11.99 per month, while the ad-free option will climb $3 to $18.99. Annual ad-free subscriptions will jump $30 to $189.99.

Bundle prices are also headed higher. The ad-supported Disney+ and Hulu bundle will increase to $12.99 from $10.99, while the Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Select bundle with ads will rise to $19.99 from $16.99. The Premium bundle, which includes ad-free Disney+ and Hulu along with ESPN Select with ads, is set to jump to $29.99 from $26.99.

It marks the fourth consecutive year Disney has raised prices on its streaming platforms as the company looks to sustain profitability in its streaming division. Shares were little changed following the news.

those who didn't cancel are the ones paying for Disney's increases.
Capitalism...gotta love it, no matter how much financial pain people want for even more commercialism and less entertainment.

But again, Disney Plus has nothing really worth of value. I tried it for a bit (because ESPN+ is part of it), was not impressed. So I am not missing anything at all.

If you have fewer customers, each needs to pay more to cover costs and maintain profits.

Bad timing, bad PR.

... from Sinclair and Nexstar boycotting content, in particular ... drumroll ... SEC football across the South.

"Sinclair in SEC states would include: Birmingham, Mobile, Little Rock, St Louis, Tulsa, Abilene, Amarillo, San Angelo, Chattanooga, Myrtle Beach, and by Popular Demand: Austin

Nexstar in SEC states would include: Dothan, New Orleans, Joplin, Knoxville, Nashville, Lubbock, Midland, Augusta, Panama City."

Birmingham is the most football-crazy town in the US, per capita, and the rest of the towns listed are HUGE outlets for SEC football.

"Broadcast" is important here bc streaming - like HULU, which offers ABC and ESPN games - would be unaffected. The Mouse may get MORE subscribers from this.

Disney wanted to raise my Subscription $40 for the year. Now that same subscription will be $189.99?

I have Netflix, which I have been a member of for 11 years. I spend more for that annually for the variety of films, series, documentaries. I write that off as a business expense for Costuming research. I also have a Starz subscription as well for the $30 special price and I may re-new that as well at the regular price for series not on Netflix.

I watch little network TV, other than for NFL football and the Olympics.

The movies hardly ever change. Last time I looked at Disney it was largely anime and cartoons.
