Former FBI Director James Comey indicted days after Trump demanded his DOJ move 'now' to prosecute enemies

Source: ABC News

September 25, 2025, 7:06 PM

Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted on charges of making a false statement and obstruction related to his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2020, just days after President Donald Trump issued a public demand for his Justice Department to act "now" to bring prosecutions against Comey and other political foes.

The charges follow Trump's ousting of the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Erik Siebert, who according to sources had expressed doubts internally about bringing cases against Comey, as well as New York Attorney General Letitia James, after Trump appointed him to lead the office.

Trump then immediately moved to install Lindsey Halligan, a White House aide and his former defense attorney, to lead the office, despite her having no prior prosecutorial experience.
Prosecutors' memo to new US attorney recommended against plans to charge James Comey: Sources

Earlier this week, federal prosecutors in Virginia informed Halligan that they could not establish probable cause to charge Comey, ABC News first reported. Despite the lack of clear evidence and ethical concerns about bringing a case without clear probable cause, Halligan sought an indictment from the grand jury.

Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted on two of three counts sought by prosecutors -- one count of making false statements and one count of obstruction of justice -- just days after President Donald Trump issued a public demand for his Justice Department to act "now" to bring prosecutions against Comey and other political foes, according to sources.

Earlier this week, federal prosecutors in Virginia informed Halligan that they could not establish probable cause to charge Comey, ABC News first reported. Despite the lack of clear evidence and ethical concerns about bringing a case without clear probable cause, Halligan sought an indictment from the grand jury.

jury this quickly and present evidence?

And...if there is eventual trial and discovery, won't he be able to talk about the abuse of power by TSF in his first term? What exactly was the lie Comey is alleged to have told?

BTW was a republican, nominated by Obama.

although federal grand juries operate differently versus typical "trial" juries as they meet on some set schedule - perhaps once a week or even once a month depending on whether any additional evidence surfaces for them to look at and witnesses are able to come in to testify (had a coworker who was on a federal grand jury and his participation was ongoing for several months).

This "rapid-fire" thing suggests they went with whatever they thought was the "strongest" allegations and dropped the rest. They may have had some witness testify to the allegations. This doesn't mean that it will survive an actual trial however.

I was training some attorneys who were going to do voter protection at a downtown law firm when the first letter came out. One of my firm's associates was taking this course and was making a funny face during my class. Later I was shocked to hear what Comey did in that it was a DOJ cardinal rule that you take no steps close to an election.

These letters got trump elected in 2016

I stand with Comey in this matter but I still have very strong feelings about this idiot.

Several career prosecutors declined to take on the case because it had no merit. Then she comes along, with no experience whatsoever, and gets an indictment. I thought grand juries are made up of reasonable, intelligent citizens doing their civic duty.

i am certainly no Comey fan. IMO he changed the 2016 election and he is responsible for the whole trump disaster. It has haunted him, and the US, for 10 years. Karma is a bitch.

Yeah, Comey played a big part in putting us in the current shit show. But, her server is such small potatoes now compared to Hogbreath discussing war plans in an open group chat.

All that being said, indicting Comey on fake and spiteful charges is beyond the pale. Does Comey have any recourse? Its probably going to bankrupt him.

the Supreme Court says he isn’t. I don’t not see the Court’s majority saying it.

TSF is acting like he wants to destroy the Comey family. First the attack on his daughter and now a disgraceful manipulation of the US court system to attempt to destroy an opponent. This is what Kings like Henry VIII did to people who opposed him. He would destroy their houses. May TSF suffer like Henry did toward the end,
