Footage has gone viral on social media showing an ICE agent repeatedly telling a hysterical woman “adios,” Spanish for goodbye, before pushing her to the ground after her husband had been detained outside an immigration court in New York City. Newsweek contacted the Department of Homeland Security for comment on Friday via email outside of regular office hours.

President Donald Trump has launched a major crackdown targeted at illegal migrants since his return to the White House in January with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency having its budget and freedom to operate dramatically increased. In recent months the number of suspected illegal immigrants arrested after allegedly crossing the southern border has fallen dramatically with some economists saying the United States could record the first population loss in its history.

What To Know

Video posted on X on Thursday by Elaad Eliahu, White House correspondent for the Tim Cast media company, shows a Latino man being detained by masked ICE agents while struggling in front of his wife and two children.

In a second clip a woman is seen confronting one of the ICE agents who told her “adios” before pushing her to the floor in front of police and onlookers. The agent then shouted “get her out of the building” as she is directed away.

I am disgusted, frustrated and frightened by this policy that isn't being strongly countered.

Peaceful, productive hardworking immigrants who are legally applying for citizenship and asylum, being kidnapped, housed in subhuman conditions then deported to who knows where.

People who have often lived here decades, own homes, raised children who are citizens and paid taxes into Social Security that they will never collect.

Often they are fleeing broken states who have suffered under centuries of US exploitation and coups.

I am frustrated because I can't stop this and am considering working on behalf of these wrongfully discriminated-against people who culturally enrich the US.
