'Flat-Out Lie!' Warren Cuts Off CBS Anchor Pushing Her on Trump Shutdown 'Talking Point'

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) cut off CBS anchor Tony Dokoupil when he suggested a Trump talking point wasn’t “strictly true,” interrupting to call it a “flat-out lie!”

President Donald Trump and the Republicans have blamed Democrats for the government shutdown by pushing the talking point that, as Trump put it in an AI-generated fake video featuring racist caricatures, Democrats want to “give all these illegal aliens free health care.”

Although that claim has been ruled false by numerous fact-checkers, Vice President JD Vance joined the White House briefing on Wednesday to press the same talking point and try to backfill an explanation. On Thursday morning’s edition of CBS News’s CBS Mornings, Senator Warren pushed back when Dokoupil tried to push her on what he called a “talking point” that isn’t “directly true”:

TONY DOKOUPIL: So, Senator, you know, Republicans say what you’re really fighting for is taxpayer dollars for, as they put it, illegal aliens. I know that’s not strictly true, but there is a provision –

SEN. ELIZABETH WARREN: Oh, excuse me, not strictly true?

TONY DOKOUPIL: It’s not directly true, but –

SEN. ELIZABETH WARREN: It is a flat-out lie! It is a flat-out lie!

TONY DOKOUPIL: – the way that they frame it –

SEN. ELIZABETH WARREN: There is nothing in Medicaid, nothing in Medicare, that permits one undocumented immigrant to get one dollar of assistance! None!

TONY DOKOUPIL: – Senator –

SEN. ELIZABETH WARREN: Zero!

(Dems are genetically programmed to get into too much detail. It is better to just stick with the simplest facts.)

1. It has never been legal for an undocumented person to get benefits from Medicare or Medicaid. Never. Nothing has changed about that for decades.

2. It has been legal for many years for people here on a legal status to receive some of these benefits. The only thing that has changed is that during the pandemic, Biden extended the visas of certain classes of people here LEGALLY. And that is a rounding error on the budget -- totally insignificant n the big picture.

3. Most states have laws requiring hospitals to provide emergency care the ANYONE with a lift-threatening condition. Lots of MAGA people do that -- showing up to the ER with no means to pay for their care. An undocumented person must be treated enough to stabilize them. That's the law -- has been for decades. This can be very costly to hospitals, obviously. Since the Reagan administration, hospitals can receive Federal reimbursements for a fraction of those costs. This is for ANYONE who cannot pay. It has nothing to do with immigration status. This Republican bill slashes those reimbursement rates, which will force many rural hospitals to close. Democrats are fighting to save these rural hospitals.

4. The GOP budget slashes the funding for ACA insurance, so some ACA premiums will skyrocket in a few weeks. Democrats are fighting to keep the ACA premium assistance in place.

Bottom line, the Republican slash-and-burn plan doesn't help anybody. It will close many hospitals (mostly in Red, rural areas) and it will make health insurance impossible for 10-20 million people. So they will just end up in the ER, unable to pay, AND the the Republicans are slashing the reimbursement rates those hospitals depend on. This is just mindless "DOGEy" stuff. It is terrible policy.
