New Trump move to etch his face on $1 coin hits snag as critics note he'd have to be dead

Source: Raw Story

October 3, 2025 5:16PM ET

The U.S. Treasury Department intends to mint a $1 coin with President Donald Trump on it, Fox Business News announced on Friday, but keen observers note a possible major snag.

"Despite the radical left's forced shutdown of our government, the facts are clear: Under the historic leadership of President Donald J. Trump, our nation is entering its 250th anniversary stronger, more prosperous, and better than ever," said a Treasury Department spokesperson in a statement to Fox Business.

Several people pointed out that the 1866 Thayer amendment, passed by Republican Martin Russell Thayer, and subsequent laws prohibit living people from being depicted on American currency. So, for Trump to put himself on a coin, the law says he would have to die.

Defector captured a page from the U.S. Treasury website that confirms the law in a "Frequently Asked Questions" section.

Sat Oct 4, 2025, 07:34 AM

We are rapidly moving to the point of "tap and go" payments, with a whole generation who is averse to any "cash". Even the modern casino slot machines are slowly moving to "cashless" (with the pandemic accelerating that move) - U.S. casinos push for cashless gambling payments, citing virus

I think this is why many have pushed for a "transaction tax" as a revenue generator due to stuff like that.

Philly has a "keycard" thing to "tap and go" and are (finally) moving to an app-fare option -

I know a lot of vending machines still require cash but some have moved to a debit/credit card option. The parking kiosks (both city parking and private lot kiosks) also have some kind of card or app scan option (where they were using $1 coins for change return in the past).

62. MetroTransit (Minneapolis - St.Paul) has a Go Card, also an app
Sat Oct 4, 2025, 11:59 AM
Oct 2025

I've been using the Go Card for over 15 years - just hold it up to or on the card reader thingy and wait for the beep.

I've always carried some quarters in case my card isn't working and they push me for alternative payment, but they never have.

I recently lost my card, so I paid for a couple trips with quarters until I got a new one.

I even screwed up with the quarters the first time. First I asked where they go, I couldn't figure it out in a moment or two. Then I dumped my 4 quarters in all at once (senior rate). Nope, that doesn't work, they have to be fed in one at a time.

As for the app, I've just never warmed up to it. Seems complicated, but anyway, one buys tickets in advance with it. Then one activates a ticket when one sees the bus coming. And then show the driver the phone with the ticket displayed. I've never used it.

The Go Card is easier than that. And I cannot warm up to getting on a bus with phone in hand and all that, especially when I'm hauling $150 in groceries at the same time. I don't like taking my phone out of my pocket unless I absolutely have to. Mostly because I may drop it or misplace it. But also because of the phone snatchers

Opinion Once vibrant, Minneapolis-St. Paul is in decline. What happened?
https://www.democraticunderground.com/105914948

Serious crime is way up since before the death of George Floyd. In Minneapolis, homicides increased 43%, auto theft surged 67% and vandalism rose 73%, per data from the Minneapolis Crime Dashboard comparing Jan. 1-Sept. 15, 2019, vs. Jan. 1-Sept. 15, 2025. While facing some of the highest rates of crime and violence in Minneapolis’s history, CBS News reports, the Minneapolis police force is down 40% in the last four years

and have yet to use but have it "just in case". I rode public transit to school for 9 years (was at a close-by school to walk the first 3 years), and to work for the first 3 years and pretty much have driven since (not counting Amtrak trips).

The train schedules got worse and worse when I was working where it was faster (and cheaper when carpooling) to drive.

I was just happy with the "tap and go" credit cards with the RF chips (first time I used one on the first card I have that got that was when I was in Canada in Niagara Falls (on the Canadian side) 11 years ago in a restaurant.

I also keep quarters as there are still some old parking meters that don't have kiosks and when I get air for my tires, the machines take quarters (although some now have some kind of electronic pay option).

I will say that since they transferred my scripts to CVS from Rite Aid, I have had a dickens of a time dealing with the CVS "app check-in" thing. The app "works" when I'm at home putzing with it but in the pharmacy, there are apparently issues with the cell signals and the QR code page in the app just spins on my phone (a new T-Mobile iPhone 17 Pro) when trying to pull it up to scan on the kiosk thing.

Any coin produced by any US Mint, since the first Cent was produced at Philadelphia in 1793, is technically legal tender (exceptions are coins produced for foreign entities, such as the Philippine and Panama issues). Most modern commemorative coins do not circulate because their issue price or precious metal price is far above their face value. For example, the gold San Francisco Old Mint coin of 2006 has a face value of $5, but the gold in it is worth around $900. But the 4 half dollar coins I mentioned actually circulated at one time.

Convicted career money laundering criminal, rapist,Russian asset, and reputed mobster, Donald "StankyFingerDollHands" Trump (P01135809), the Worst President in United States History, surprisingly died of complications due to a combination of an abrupt guilty conscience and terminal moral bankruptcy on [Date] at the age of [Age]. Trump's normally bloated, morbidly obese, lifeless body, found by his then, male odor wife, Malaria, was slumped over his fabled Gold-plated toilet, and dressed in what appeared to be WWII-era German Lederhosen. His hands were still desperately clutching a first edition, autographed copy of Mein Kampf. . Trump's death truly marked the end of a criminalized, tumultuous and polarizing era/error in American politics.

Donald J. Trump's Epitaph:

There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile,
.
He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile;
.
He wed a pornstar cat that caught a crooked rat,
.
And they all lived together in a little crooked shack.

Everyone will remember how fat he is.

Nobody will be able to carry it around so nobody will see them

No stores or banks will take it because of the weight.

Of course, we can always put his picture on the front of a $1 bitcoin. Pffft!

was if a special disposition was made for all 45 Presidents, living or dead, to be on coinage for the 250th celebration.

But we know that isn't going to happen.

96. MaddowBlog-Treasury eyes a commemorative dollar coin for Trump, with plans for a 2026 rollout

It might sound like a weird joke, but there’s an actual plan to make a legal tender $1 coin next year that would glorify the incumbent president.

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/trump-dollar-coin-2026-rollout-rcna235974

It’s against this backdrop that NBC News reported:

The Treasury on Friday shared draft images of a $1 commemorative coin, featuring President Donald Trump’s visage, that the United States Mint is preparing in honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Trump’s instantly recognizable profile is featured on the ‘heads’ side of the coin. On the ‘tails’ side, the coin will have an image of Trump with his first raised, standing in front of an American flag.

.....I should probably emphasize that this is not a joke. The report is not satire. This is not intended to make the administration look foolish for the sake of comedy......

Putting aside questions of propriety, how would this be legal? The answer is, it might not be. The New York Times reported:

The Treasury is authorized to mint the coins for a year, according to the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020. The coins must have ‘designs emblematic of the U.S. semiquincentennial,’ the legislation says. It is not clear that Mr. Trump’s image can be featured on a coin. An 1866 law enshrined a tradition that only deceased people could appear on U.S. currency to avoid the appearance that America was a monarchy.

Let’s also not overlook the fact that the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 also states, “No head and shoulders portrait or bust of any person, living or dead, and no portrait of a living person may be included in the design on the reverse of any coin under subsections (x), (y), and (z).”

I wish that this was satire.
