Rescue efforts are under way in the remote Tibetan slopes of Mount Everest where a snowstorm has trapped nearly 1,000 people in campsites on the eastern side of the mountain, according to Chinese state media.

Hundreds of local villagers and rescue teams have been deployed to clear out snow blocking access to the area which sits at an altitude of more than 4,900 metres (16,000 feet).

According to local media about 350 people have been rescued and guided to safety to the small township of Qudang town, the Reuters news agency said.

Heavy snowfall began on Friday evening and has intensified on the eastern slopes of Mount ............

"The weather this year is not normal. The guide said he had ever encountered such weather in October. And it happened all too suddenly.".............................

Most mountain climbers (who are healthy and in good condition) can survive for 24 hours, but after that it gets dicy.

They have guides carry all their crap and follow a path layed out for them.

there is so much garbage left behind, it's disgusting.

there are now long lines if people trying to reach the summit, leaving trash in their wake.

Sherpa's now literally carry people up the slopes.

13. May is climbing season for Everest proper... I think one side is..

..less strenuous more of a trek. Still at 16,000 ft it is not for an inexperienced weekend hike.

A friend of mine belongs to an adventure group and they have hiked up to base camp...not sure which side she went up. Shes senior citizen like me so Im sure she didnt do anything REAL dangerous.. still she had to go across a rope bridge. I would have stopped right there, sat in the snow and waited for them to return.
