Argentina's midterm election hands landslide win to Milei's libertarian overhaul

Source: Reuters

BUENOS AIRES, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Early results in Argentina's legislative elections on Sunday showed a landslide victory for President Javier Milei as voters overwhelmingly backed his free-market reforms and deep austerity measures, providing a strong boost for the libertarian leader to continue his economic overhaul.

The president's party, La Libertad Avanza, scored 41.5% of the vote in Buenos Aires province compared with 40.8% for the Peronist coalition, according to official results. The province has long been a political stronghold for the Peronists, marking a dramatic political shift.

Nationwide, La Libertad Avanza got 64 seats in the House of Deputies, up from 37, according to government figures.

Milei was aiming to boost his small minority in Congress and maintain the support of U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration recently provided Argentina with a hefty financial bailout but has threatened to pull away if Milei did not do well.

them and their country, I'll never understand. You even have examples to point to in glorious color right in front of their faces. Still, it's somewhat comforting to know we're not the only complete nitwits in the world.

Is this "landslide" like Trump's 48.5% of the popular vote?

It was a 72.97% increase in seats, something Democrats or Republicans have never come close to when they had massive takeovers in the House. It was also in a province that was unfriendly to Milei's Party.

I've seen speculation that Milei got a big boost from Trump's last-minute $40B bailout package - another version of the October Surprise.

A Peronist stronghold. Milei’s party gained 27 seats in the National Congress in a system with 93 parties.

Nothing says successful economic policies like requiring a big bailout from American taxpayers. It was contingent on his party doing well in the elections.

There were massive tax funded bailouts here in the US at the end of George W. Bush's second term and Trump's first term. Because conservatives are liberating us from government like that. MAGA!

"Vote for me, get 40 billion. Vote for my opposition, get nothing." Essentially, a bribe/extortion.

Argentinians chose accordingly.
