Trump threatens to sue BBC for $1 billion over edited coverage of him

Source: Politico

Donald Trump threatened to sue the BBC for $1BN on Monday, amid a deepening crisis at Britain’s main public broadcaster over its coverage of his administration.

The move comes a day after the resignation of the broadcaster’s director general and its most senior news executive. The pair had come under fire over coverage of the U.S. president’s remarks on Jan. 6, 2021 — the day rioters breached the U.S. Congress.

According to NBC News and Fox News Digital, a letter from Trump’s legal team gave the BBC a deadline of 5 p.m. EST (10 p.m. in the U.K.) this coming Friday, Nov. 14, to “retract” any “false, defamatory, disparaging, and inflammatory statements” about him.

Failure to comply will, Trump’s team reportedly said, mean the president will be “left with no alternative but to enforce his legal and equitable rights, all of which are expressly reserved and are not waived, including by filing legal action for no less than $1,000,000,000 (One Billion Dollars) in damages. The BBC is on notice.”

British Broadcasting Corporations first answer would simply be - we're a UK broadcaster governed by UK law, sue us in the right court first.

Second answer would be that the BBC is a regulated broadcaster and is subject to those regulations.... Has DJT filed the appropriate complaint with the regulator?

In any case the BBC is probably under particular scrutiny by the US right wing because the BBC does have a significant US presence. If a major non-English speaking broadcaster were to broadcast the same stuff and not in the USA these right wing Yanks wouldn't be saying a thing and DJT would be clueless.

Has Trump reimbursed Christopher Steele as it has been ordered to.

What if a UK court said they will not hear any complaint until Trump pays?

BBC tried to placate this useless sack of rotting protoplasm and, predictably, he wants more.

They should have stood firm and refused to provide any ceremonial sacrifices (resignations). Then told Trump to do something anatomically impossible to himself.

They just fanned the flames of Trump’s inexhaustible fountain of grievance.
