Christie: Comments on Obama, Boehner part of job

Source: AP-Excite

ANGELA DELLI SANTI

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - In 2010, Gov. Chris Christie underestimated the first major storm of his administration by flying to Disney World hours before snow crippled New Jersey. A year later, he overplayed Tropical Storm Irene with the now-infamous order, "Get the hell off the beach."

When Superstorm Sandy set its sights on his state, he had learned his lesson: be more hands on, more empathetic.

"I had a sense from the beginning that this one was going to be really bad," Christie, 50, told The Associated Press in an interview last week that reflected on a first term that has now positioned him in the national spotlight and as a potential 2016 presidential contender.

"With Irene, I went back and forth because the forecasts were going back and forth. When the National Weather Service says it's going to be a wipe out of the Shore then they start backing off of that, it's very difficult to set the right tone and, candidly, make the right decisions," he said. "I might have been firmer in Sandy if it hadn't been for the experience of Irene when I got everybody off the beach and nothing really awful happened there."

In this Jan. 4, 2013, photo, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie poses for a photo in his office at the Statehouse in Trenton, N.J. The first-term Republican has earned nearly universal praise for his handling of Superstorm Sandy, the state's worst natural disaster. But some within his own party called him out for embracing the Democratic president and hurling angry words at a fellow Republican. Christie says the storm and its aftermath should transcend politics. He says he praised the president because Obama was on the front lines helping New Jersey and he called out the speaker after 66 days had elapsed without Congress acting on the aid package. I always drove down to ties stuff down and take home what I could. With Irene, there were police cars going up and down the roads saying "get off the island". With Sandy, All the warnings I heard were on TV and radio. I left the island the day before the storm each time.

I think that there was a bit of under reaction this time. Although there was the Christie AC mayor argument. AC did not get hurt as much as was predicted.

He'e still a Repuke, and for that reason, his motives are questionable, but as a New Jersey resident during Sandy, I am grateful how he welcomed President Obama with open arms and didn't play political games. And his willingness to call out Republican leadership in his own party is a plus.

Those images of him standing with President Obama after Sandy will stand with me for the rest of my life.

Still, I remember "pre-Sandy Christie" and his snarky, rethug remarks/image. I cannot see him as a a leader for anyone but the elite. Actually, their waterboy.
To me he will always be an "I got mine, fuck the rest" kind of jerk...

that he is a Repuke... and that his motives are questionable.

However, he is one of the better of the Repukes. Doesn't say much, but it does say something..

And I do live in Ocean County, so that may color my judgment a little.

He's still republican but he isn't afraid to call bullshit even if it's his own party, and having nice words for someone weather they are in his party or not. He's got a lot on his plate with this storm, and has done a pretty good job of handling it. It's really a shame that a party he doesn't even belong to has his back more than the one he does belong to. He's just trying to help people who are suffering so much in his state, and it's sad partisanship means more to people like John Boehner and Mitch McConnell than actually helping suffering people. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Chris Christie become an independent within the next several years.
